I've seen a few tutorials about ungrouping the .ai layers etc, beside that, I can't seem to find much else on the topic? Any pointers or instructions?

These are the simple rules that you should follow when creating artwork for video:
Follow those suggestions, make sure that you manage your colors, make all PSD files at least 16 bit color, and you should be fine.

While working some client provided .ai files, we've run into issues with the artwork showing up pixelated an unable to render in AF, consiquntly the same .ai file artwork displays and renders fine in PP. Following the outlined approach, the .ai file in question breaks about principle. We will rebuild the .ai file and future files following these principles.
