My computer is configured with 64G of memory, and 90% is allocated to Adobe AfterEffects.I'm using AfterEffects with nothing else open.
When I was compositing my project (3840*1920 @59.94 fps), it prompted me out of memory. In my project, there are only 4 shape layers, and there are no expressions, animations, 3D effects.
After the insufficient memory warning, my browser, social software crashed one after another, and the whole system also crashed. In the end, I had to restart the computer to solve it.
This problem has come up more than once, but this time is the most outrageous. I want to fix the out of memory issue, but I don't see the ‘Reduce cache size when system is low on memory’ button. in Preferences.
The AfterEffects version I tried is 23.5
Computer configuration is 12700K,RTX 3080,64G RAM,2T NVME SSD.
System version is Windows 11 Professional Edition 22621.1992

Try opening Preferences/Memory and Performance. Shortcut: Alt/Option + Ctrl/Cmnd + ;
Try setting memory for other applications to an even multiple of 4 GB. Try 4, 8, or even 12. The pipeline is about 4GB wide, and AE doesn't seem to like it when part of their processing is sent down part of a memory pipe. Evey if you close everything but AE, something is running in the background.

Yes, that's how I set it up. My computer is 32G*2, memory 64G. I allocated 56G for AfterEffects and 8G for other applications.
At first I thought it was because the resolution of my compositing was too high, and I planned to upgrade the memory to 128G, but when I was doing a sketch, a few simple shape layers also had a warning of insufficient memory, I thought it might be a software setting Something went wrong.

Would you open TaskManager and check what application and activity consume the physical memory?

Yes, I have opened TaskManager and Task Manager in Windows to check the specific memory usage. Apart from AfterEffects, there is no additional overhead.
I encounter this problem often after AfterEffects is placed in the background for a period of time and then used.
There may be a 15-second 4k composition, which contains only five shape layers, and a yellow reminder of "I hope I release it because of insufficient memory" will appear at the bottom of the preview page. This problem just happened. And I opened TaskManager and Task Manager, the memory usage is not even 50%.

Just now, I tried to restore the problem I encountered. And it's extremely easy to reproduce.
1. When I close AfterEffects, the memory usage is 12% (7.7G)
2. When I open AfterEffects and open a project, the memory occupies 16% (12.7G)
3. I played the synthetic clip under my project, and the memory usage is 25% (15.7G)
4. I waited for a minute, then moved the position of one of the shape layers, previewed and played again, and the memory occupied 34% (21.4G)
I repeated move, preview play, move, preview play several times. My memory hits the limit of 56G, then gradually decreases to 50G. After waiting for a few minutes, it didn't drop.
That said, AfterEffects didn't help me clean up the memory after I previewed the footage. And maybe because of the 4K compositing? The cache I preview once is close to 6G. Maybe my best solution now is to remember the number of times I previewed, and manually release the memory a certain number of times?
It is worth mentioning that the composition that takes up 6G cache only has about 20 shape layers, less than 20 key frames, and no motion blur.

Still having issues with this too. AE 2023 has been renamed Memory Leak 5000. Eats 123GB of RAM on render and then doesn't purge when done unless I hit it manually. LOL.
