I imported a photoshop document into aftereffects 2023 and all the layers were initially able to be adjusted freely like an image. However after I make any changes to the photoshop document itself all layers are restricted to 5 seconds. I import the files, drag and drop the layers into the timeline, and I can extend them to fit the composition length I want, but as soon as I save the corresponding Photoshop file they all snap back to 5 seconds no matter what. I can then click reload footage on the files and they will lose their set duration, but I have to drag and drop again and it will just get set back to 5 when I save the PSD again. Why does this happen?

It appears to also happen when saving and exiting and then reopening the aftereffects file itself. This makes it very difficult to edit a video with photoshop layers as one cannot have a layer longer than 5 seconds.

It looks like you have imported your PSD files as Photoshop Sequences, rather than as still images. After Effects sometimes defaults to this setting if you have a bunch of file names that are numerically sequential. Make sure you uncheck the "Importer(format) sequence" checkbox when you import.
You can just right click and replace your current files in the Project window to fix these.
