Quickly Cycle Fonts

Explorer ,
Oct 30, 2017 Oct 30, 2017

Since the last update to Ae I can't seem to be able to cycle through fonts like I used to. I believe before I could place my cursor in the font selector bar and cycle through them with the up/down arrow keys. Now, when I place the cursor it opens the font menu and my comp doesn't update responsively.

Any suggestions?

You are correct. We got a font preview and lost the scroll through the fonts using arrow keys. I'm not very happy about losing the ability to just step through fonts, but I'm very happy about the font previews and a bunch of other new features.

Yes, that seems to be the case. We do get the filters for favorites and Typekit fonts but have lost the automatic update. Just let Adobe know by submitting a request/bug report:

This is so much worse. The previews don't work for the majority of my fonts and they don't even matter because I need to visually test the fonts against the background. I might need to downgrade just because of the amount of time this is going to cost me.

For now, a workaround is scrolling with your mouse wheel as you hover over the font choice.

@Roei  Tzoref , that works!

A little slow and fidgety but I guess better than what I have been doing, jumping into Photoshop and back to AE when I really needed to.

It's not really a workaround at all.    The up and down arrows still scroll the list and select the font, the issue that that when you scroll the text does not update in the comp window.  Using the mouse wheel to scroll doesn't even select the font in the character panel so I don't understand how anybody could consider it a workaround.   And going into photoshop to select font?  What?!!  Why?!  Just to waste time?

Well at least in PS you can still scroll through the fonts! I usually have it running anyway. I often need to see my TITLE font in the font to decide or match and the word Sample just won't cut it.

Almost too slow to be useful. Part of the issue is it seems to do a double entry for each new font that does nothing. So there is a false entry on scroll then a good entry then a false entry etc. That along with the second or two to refresh and the carpel tunnel you are experiencing and ... yea they need to fix this.

Having the ability to preview each typeface using the arrow keys was mega quick. A preview of typeface using the word Sample is totally pointless. I also use a Wacom (no scroll wheel) and on laptops there is no scroll wheel either. It's incredibly frustrating and actually hinders a normal workflow. Yes overall the new panel is great but something this "basic" really seems odd to have been overlooked.

Totally agree. I think that Adobe should stop to add new features or change things that are perfectly ok for a moment and focus to fix basics like the font scrolling, the Ram preview witch is still super buggy, etc.

This is on our radar for a future update. We simply ran out of time to get step-through previews working with the new panel this cycle.

Was the new character panel going to explode if you didn't release it or something?  You should consider releasing every two years.   That way you could release less "nearly finished" features.   When is the new C4D renderer going to be finished?   Ooops.  teehee.

You know what.  Even if you did run out of time you should just lie and say: "the dev team screwed up, sorry".  It would be so refreshing to hear you girls and guys own the mess that is AE, just once, without any excuses.

So why did you made that change ? Please stop to add unwanted, unfinish and untested functionalities to AE.

"We ran out of time"....are you kidding me?   You should have postponed released to make sure you weren't screwing your customers out of a feature that's so heavily used. This is getting old...I would have thought an update would have been released by now to address this. Get it together Adobe. You're making things miserable for your customer.

Well, Adobe cares more about attracting NEW renters than it does about fixing things for existing renters.  So the team focuses more on new features than it does on fixes.  Hell, you're already renting from them.  They've got you by the short hairs.

There's not much money to be made by fixing things, but there IS money to be made by creating new features to attract new renters... and Adobe then has THEM by the short hairs.

Helluva way to run a business, isn't it?

There are laws in America to protect consumers & industries who suffer the indifference of companies who have no competition to motivate them.

Simply file a bug report with your state representative. The more bug reports they get...the more likely things will change

Hi Victoria,

This functionality seems to be broken again in CC 2020.

Switching font with up/down arrow key doesn't work in anymore AE 2020 whereas it does in CC 2019

My mistake.  If you scroll without expanding the font list then the font updates about 10% of the time.

Still it's no workaround...What it is, is accidentally working in an unexpected way.

But hey.....who even uses AFter Effects for text anyway, right?

I wish they'd kill this thread because anytime someone posts to it it reminds me of the issue and aggravates me.
