ram preview used to be a rock solid feature of after effect.
since few years it has been changed, and now ,if the project is too demanding for the cpu or you are rendering something else in another program, ram preview is no longer in real time.
And this is a HUGE problem, not being able to see what you are doing in real time is program breaking.
it used to work perfectly.and now it doesnt!
is there any fix? thanks!

Can you tell us please what tech spec have got your system? In addition to telling us what format your composition has? What codec do the videos you are working with or what exactly are you doing, if you are applying effects, which ones? There are many variables to determine the reason why something is happening with your preview.

i7 5820k
64 gb ram
1060 gtx
i am working with tiff sequence, using 3d cameras, 2.5d layers, compound blur, displacement map, turbulent displace, cc glass, shift channel, curves.
but i dont think all this dont matter too much, i used many different systems (always windows) and done many different projects, this problem as affected me since adobe changed the ram preview, it was not present before.

Which version for AE do you use now and which version did you use before? And what exactly do you mean by "broken"?
Usually preview is not realtime when frames are not pre-rendered, but as soon as AE has rendered everything, RAM preview is fine. However, overall performance is really low since forever.

i have used ae since cs3. right now i am using v15.1.0
by broken i mean that when i have all my frame cached, everything is green, i cannot play them in real time.
this is happening almost every time my composition gets complex.

Oh! Did you clear Media Cache in Ae preferences? Try that

i cleared the cache and its not working.
but i may have found something interesting.
If i precompose everything, ram preview works fine.

You are using processes that demand a lot of power from your computer, this happens only with this project or with everyone? try to do the RAM Preview in 50% of Zoom and Half of quality resolution in composition panel.

I dont get it, why half res? Once is pre rendered and green it should play realtime no matter what. Unless there is a problem with the memory bandwidth or video drivers.

True that - once it's green, it should playback in realtime.
Does this happen when you create a new project from scratch? Can you try your project on a different pc?
If you have the possibility to re-install AE, try this. You can also re-install OS. Maybe something got messed up in the meantime. Even if this shouldn't happen, a clean install can solve a lot of problems which appear over time.

Exactly!
My compositions cant play realtime in a quarter of the resolution with all frames green.
But when i precompose everything, it works real time. looks like a bug to me
i had problem with the ram preview since they changed it many year ago.
it looks to me it is still a very unreliable feature. and it cant be, ram preview must be rock solid! its probably one of the most important feature of the program!

If you are using 15 you should be on 15.3, that's the latest version of the 15 series.

The computer systems or applications are not perfect and everything can happen, you have to discard possibilities so I ask you to do that test. And yourself just answered the reason why I'm asking you to do the test.

Ram previews have been broken since v 2015. I just tried installing 2019 and I still can't get a decent playback. 2014 renders and plays back video flawlessly, so I'm sticking with that until adobe hires someone competent enough to fix the problem (probably never).

Mike,
Have you tried the "Cache Before Playback" function? That can help. That's what I use.
Thanks,
Kevin

That seems to fix most of the problems, but it still has some audio stuttering issues. It's better, but it's still not as good as 2014. It also seems a lot slower than 2014 is, but I haven't actually timed it.

Actually, a new version of After Effects was released last night with a bug fix that addresses this issue. Please try it out with a test project and let us know how it goes. I'd be very interested to see if this issue finally goes away.
Could you check it out with your files and let us know?
Thanks,
Kevin
