Scripting Equivalent of Grouping For After Effects a La Illustrator?

Can you explain a bit more what you mean by grouping? Do you mean something else apart from parenting?

Say you have 2 text boxes in which you feed dynamic text and set alignment (top left, top middle, top right, middle left, etc.), but the alignment is for the text boxes as a group.

In other apps (not necessarily for Adobe), we have a system whereby the user defines a maximum area (a reference box) in which the text boxes can live. Depending on the length of the text in each box, the font size will adjust so that the group never exceeds the width and height of the text box, but the text boxes as a group remain set to the user-specified vertical/horizontal alignment relative to the reference box.

We are trying to figure out a way to recreate this method in AE, but beyond some initial tinkering with parenting the text boxes to null layers, have been drawing a blank. So I was curious if anyone else had encountered such a use case and devised or encountered any solutions.
