seems that the new behavior is hat a new timeline is created for any imported element on the last version of AE, this is rather annoying and a waste of time deleting unnecessary timelines.
Is there a way to avoid this behavior?

There is a checkbox in the finder panel that is opened when you Import. Just uncheck it. Import will always remember the last settings you have selected.
In Preferences>Import there is an option to drag multiple items as footage or as a composition.
All of this is noted in the new features documentation that you should at least take a look at before you upgrade. There are a lot of other changes that can be very important if you are an advanced user like changes to the Expressions Engine and Video
