The background wall layer is a solid purple with CC Threads to make this texture. So the colors get divided into two. Are these considered the "Channels"?
I want to manipulate the dark area, but I seem to be able to only manipulate the purple "hatches", one half of the colors of the layer. Is there an effect to do that? Thanks.
If you use CC Threads, so the dark area is a alpha channel (transparency) so you can set a new solid under the solid purple and use any color you want.

Sorry, your picture doesn't show up.
But to answer your question, a channel refers to a color channel - red, blue, green and ALSO Alpha, which is a transparency channel.

As guided by OussK, you can just put a solid layer below the CC threads layer to control the background colour. Please refer the screenshot below -
