I uploaded pictures and videos from my iPhone 5S to my PC and got a lot of aae files that I couldn't open. It was telling me I didn't have permission to open the file even though I'm the administrator. What am I up against here?

a simple Google search tells you what they are:

THey appear ti be new and with all news things compatibility with other software is hit and miss until they adopt the format. Looks to be nothing more than metadata files basically. Not likely something that ExtendScript can do anything with really. What are you trying to script with these?

Files with the extension .aae files are usually files, which are created by the operating systems OS X Yosemite or iOS 8 on the Mac, iPhones or iPads. Basically it is additional files that are created next to the actual jpg-photo-file.
An AAE file contains edits made to an image using the Photos app on an iOS device. AAE files can be found in the images for which they contain edits. iPhone, Windows and Apple Mac users sorting through photo libraries have probably noticed the appearance of AAE files, The files which ending in the .AAE extension. By their file names, these typically look like image files (IMG 2153.AAE)
In the .aae files, the individual steps are stored in an XML-based format. The Mime type of the .aae files stream. Files with the file ending .aae may be opened in the future with the Mac photo management Lightroom, in order to import the processing steps to the photos.
Since Apple has launched the .AAE file type with iOS 8, the aae files are only 1KB small and therefore it don’t take much space.
