After you have made sure your workflow is efficient and you are following best practices invest in RenderGarden but make sure your system is compatible, you have sufficient ram, drive space and that your version of After Effects is up to date. Inexperienced users often paint themselves in a corner because they do not really understand how the software works, how compositing and visual effects can be produced efficiently and they lack an understanding of video standards, formats, and compression. Most of those kinds of problems can be traced to trying to learn After Effects by simply following tutorials produced by amateurs that do not have a good understanding of workflows and best practices.

A quick answer: fast processors, sufficient RAM, sufficient display RAM,  and fast storage.

That'll keep your AE work and renders going quickly as well as Vegas, Premiere Pro, Photoshop, Resolve, Media Composer, Illustrator, iMovie, Final Cut Pro X, Nuke, PowerPoint, Keynote, so forth and so on.

AE is not multiprocessor aware so the fastest way to speed up rendering (alongside render garden!) is having the fastest Mhz chip. One fast chip is better than 8 slower ones as it only uses one processor (unless you use Render Garden),
