Automatic file name version number detection

If a create project_v1.aep on a computer, saving my files to something like OneDrive, then continue the project on another computer, saving project_v2.aep there. Then once again I continue with another computer (the first one, perhaps), now File / Open Recent (and Windows Start Menu) only detects v1 even v2 exists! So in a hurry, I will miss the discrepancy. For various reasons, I may not realize the mistake, continuing to edit the file extensively. Then I see my mistake and now I have a mess – two project files and I don't remember what I updated on which file.

So, After Effects should simply ask this when opening "The most recent file is project_v2.aep, would you like to open this instead"? Or, it could indicate this while already loading and after the file has loaded. Then main thing is that the user doesn't start editing the old version unknowingly.

This applies to all Adobe programs (and could well be even a operating system level feature, but better start somewhere).

The Teams version already does this sort of version management, so it's not that the feature doesn't exist. You just have to pay more.

Hi @distriller,

Thanks very much for this feature request! As @Mylenium pointed out, this type of automatic project versioning is available in Team Projects, though I will have to correct him on "paying more"; Team Projects are available to all After Effects users with a Creative Cloud subscription.

When using a Team Project, you push your local changes into a cloud version of the project and then you can pull them down on another system working on the same project. More details are available here: https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-pro/using/team-projects-overview.html

Thanks again,

- John, After Effects Engineering Team

Sounds like you need Version Raptor. The Safe Versioning feature will warn you if there's a newer version of your current project file.

That Version Raptor seeems great, that you very much (although, after installing and enabling its pane, its there but I couldn't yet get it warn me about the newer version – I'll contact the author or something).

For Team Projects, I didn't understand the instruction page for that. Anyway, I could change my initial request: this Version Raptor functionality could be default on all Adobe programs.

Also, actually there's another crucial similar functionality: when editing on After Effects from a fresh start, as "Untitled Project", it should auto-save all the time, or very frequently, or warn about the non-save status. Countless times over the years I've started a project, gotten very far with my work, forgetting to save, and the program or whole operating system crashes. So I lost my projects that way.
