Better Set Matte Effekt

It would be great if the “Set Matte” effect were no longer dependent on the position and scaling of the mask layer, but instead worked more like a stencil, similar to “tracking matte.” In my workflow, I would definitely use this type of function 100% of the time instead of how it is currently implemented.

Completely understand your use case here. As an effect that gets rendered among other effects, Set Matte is limited in its behaviors. Currently, effects that reference other layers do so "peer to peer"...they simply refer to the pixel content of the referenced layer. To grab those pixels after they're transformed or scaled or rotated as a layer in the comp would require a different rendering order for effect references. Track mattes work at a different stage in the layer rendering pip

If I'm reading this right, try unchecking Stretch Matte to Fit.

To grab those pixels after they're transformed or scaled or rotated as a layer in the comp would require a different rendering order for effect references. Track mattes work at a different stage in the layer rendering pipleline so they are able to grab those pixels after they've been transformed as a layer.
