Advanced Duplicator System

Explorer ,
Jun 19, 2025 Jun 19, 2025

As a long-time user and motion designer, I’m writing to request the addition of a native Duplicator system in After Effects—comparable to the powerful one available in Cavalry. While After Effects is excellent for compositing and animation, its current duplication and instancing workflow is extremely manual and outdated compared to modern tools.

The Problem

Currently, duplicating objects and managing variations in AE requires a combination of precomps, parenting, expressions, or third-party tools. This process is slow, lacks flexibility, and is not visually intuitive—especially when working with large numbers of repeated elements in motion graphics, UI, or pattern-based animation.

Proposed Feature: After Effects Duplicator

Here’s what the new Duplicator panel/system should offer, inspired by Cavalry:

Core Features

  • Instance-Based Duplication
Like shape layers or nulls, duplications should be instances (linked copies), not flattened clones. Editing one updates all.

  • Grid / Radial / Linear / Point-Based Layouts
Built-in layout engines that allow creating arrays of layers in:

    • Rows and columns (Grid)

    • Circular patterns (Radial)

    • Along a path or set of positions (Point distribution)

    • Random scatter within a defined area

  • Per-Instance Modifiers
Built-in controls that allow modifying individual instance properties, such as:

    • Scale, Rotation, Opacity, Position Offset

    • Color Tint

    • Delay / Time Offset

    • Expression access (instance index, total count)

  • Live Preview & Adjustment
Real-time UI to adjust parameters such as instance count, spacing, rotation offset, and distribution shape, with instant feedback.

  • Effector-Like System (Inspired by Mograph/Cavalry)
Allow effectors (such as falloffs, noise, or fields) to drive variations across instances:

    • Example: Use a linear field to progressively scale instances

    • Combine multiple effectors to create organic, procedural animations

  • Path-Based Duplication
Distribute instances along a Bézier path, with rotation alignment, spacing, and directional animation.

  • Shape Layer Compatibility
Full support for duplicating within shape layers (like repeater, but enhanced and more visual), as well as across compositions.

  • Performance-Oriented
Instancing should be memory-efficient and GPU-accelerated, allowing hundreds of duplicates without slowdown.

Advanced Ideas

  • Tagging System for Layer Groups
Tag a layer or group, then duplicate it via rules (e.g. "duplicate this logo 5 times in a spiral, fade opacity")

  • UI Panel or Modifier Stack
A dedicated Duplicator Panel with an intuitive modifier stack system (similar to how layer styles or effects work).

  • Export to Precomps or Bake to Layers
After building an instance-based system, users should be able to bake it into real AE layers or precomps for final polish and export.

Why This Is Important

Motion designers are increasingly looking for fast, procedural, and modular workflows. Tools like Cavalry, Cinema 4D’s MoGraph, and Blender’s Geometry Nodes are offering highly creative workflows that save hours of manual duplication and give designers more power and control.

Bringing a similar system natively into After Effects would:

  • Greatly improve motion graphics workflows

  • Reduce reliance on third-party plugins

  • Make After Effects competitive with modern procedural tools

  • Open up new creative possibilities without coding

Who Would Benefit

  • Motion designers working on UI/UX, HUDs, infographics

  • Social media content creators and template makers

  • VFX artists need fast repetitive structures

  • Educators teaching procedural design in AE

Not intending to compare ants and oranges -

These are done precedurally with AE's Text Expression Selectors. They share quite a fair bit of similarities with Generative Coding. I've only scratched the surface - just 2-3 days of code and experimentation and UI Development. They render really fast too but can slow down quickly when per character 3D is is part of the process.

Look up Repiece who does interesting stuff - not inherently all text-based but very good at Mograph-Styled distribution and cloning of layers.

I hope Adobe listsens, this would be amazing to have and really push the app forward, in a useful way for artists (moreso than most generative AI features I fear are coming).

Would love to see even a modicum of reactors, instancing, grids etc. Especially since having a layer stack over a couple hundred layers reall bogs down the app, especially on Windows machines.

The highest hurdle, for now, is getting the render engine to be really really really fast. Without this, all the nice sparkles aren't going to be utilized as much as they should and/or by as many users.

I've always thought there will always be a good demand for a MoGraph-Only render engine in AE which could then blossom into a hybrid to support moving source footage. This MoGraph-Only render engine would be really fast with lots of state of the moment features for speed and creativity while leveraging all the good stuff currently in AE. I would also build a Web UI for this MoGraph-Only AE Render Engine which could work interchangeably with a desktop AEMP (After Effects MoGraph Project File).

Most folks see AE as just a product but I also see it as a brand and lots more can be done to leverage this branding but it has to be done soon or it'll be left behind as time and competitors come on board.

Yeah it still straddles this weird nieche of low end VFX compositor and motion graphics industry standard.

"Weird" carries different connotations - for AE, I see it as unique and not strange/awkward/MEH. Back to Point - Render Engine Options opens up lots of opportunities for AE and its users. As it is, AE already has different render engines for standard AE work and 3D AE workflows. So, adding a MoGraph Optimized Render Engine will work well. It'll be like LottieFiles but 10x-100x better and built for today and the foreseable/imaginable future.

I've got 3 soon-to-be-released scripts that should help AE users quite a fait bit. This sequence took about 40 minutes to set up and offers lots of options.

We're looking at 3 scripts to set this up -
Keyframe Orchestrator
Layer Grouper
bGEMs Distributor

- flares are from Video Copilot's Optical Flares.

Not as quick as Cavalry for previews but they're a lot quicker to set up IMO. The main bottleneck seems to be AE's timeline architecture especially moving and time stretching keyframes. What's cool is the ability to orchestrate lots of keyframes in a powerful and intuitive way.

Take a look at this script - it allows for advanced and intelligent keyframe set ups across lots of layers and keyframes and doesn't require selecting keyframes while still being able to make adjustments to specific keyframe indices.

The Duplicator Script is about to be completed too.  🙂
