Hi everyone,
I’m working on VFX for a short film and have run into a color discrepancy issue that I hope someone might be able to help with.
Project Details:
- Footage: The video was shot on a Sony Alpha SIII in S-Gamut3.Cine/S-Log3.
- Objective: I need to add 2D elements to the background of one shot using Photoshop’s generative AI.
- Process:
- After Effect working color Space is Rec. 709 Gamma 2.4
- Export: I export a frame from After Effects with a Rec. 709 LUT applied via Composition - Save Frame As Photoshop Layers.
- Photoshop: I add background elements to the exported frame. Photoshop's working color space is set to Rec. 709 Gamma 2.4.
- Reimport: After editing, I reimport the Photoshop file back into After Effects.
Issue:
When I import the Photoshop file into After Effects the colors of the photoshop layer match perfectly with the video footage (Rec.709 Lut applied).
However, when I apply the Profile Converter effect to the photoshop layer (Input: Rec. 709 Gamma 2.4, Output: S-Gamut3.Cine/S-Log3) and switch of the LUT on the video layer, the colors don’t match the original video footage. Specifically, the Photoshop layer appears slightly darker compared to the video footage
Troubleshooting Steps Taken:
Verified Color Profiles and Settings:
- Ensured that the Photoshop file is correctly converted to Rec. 709 Gamma 2.4.
- Checked that After Effects color management settings match Rec. 709 Gamma 2.4.
Profile Converter Effect:
- Double-checked the settings for the Profile Converter effect.
Other Effects and Layers:
- Verified there are no additional effects affecting the appearance.
Software Updates:
- Confirmed that both Photoshop and After Effects are updated to their latest versions.
Request:
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to resolve this discrepancy? I’m looking for advice on ensuring that my Photoshop edits match the original video footage when reimported into After Effects.
Thanks in advance for your help!
