after effects crash can't continue encountered a gpu or graphics driver issue

I’ve experienced this issue multiple times, even when I’m not doing anything heavy — just working with 2-3 image layers. After Effects often freezes (especially when I press Alt+Tab to switch between windows), and then crashes. My monitor goes black for a few seconds and comes back on with the error message:
"After Effects crash: can't continue. Encountered a GPU or graphics driver issue."

This is incredibly frustrating. It doesn’t just happen occasionally — it happens frequently. And from the number of posts about this issue, it seems like it’s been going on for a long time.
But so far, there’s been no real action from Adobe. The usual suggestion is to switch to “Mercury Software Only”, but honestly, that doesn’t solve anything.

Please, this is exhausting to deal with — is there any real fix or update on this?

Alright guys, I think I’ve finally solved the issue.

  1. First, install DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) to completely clean your GPU drivers.
  2. Then, reinstall your GPU driver (I used NVIDIA GeForce Experience).
  3. Finally, reinstall After Effects.

After doing these steps, the problem was completely gone

no more errors at all until now.

Thanks for reaching out, Finfin.

What version of the GPU driver are you using? Please check if there are any updates available.

Thanks,
Nishu

Currently, I'm using update 576.52.
I'll try updating and check if the issue still occurs

Hey, I’ve already updated to the latest NVIDIA Studio Driver, but the crash still happens.
I also tried disconnecting my dual monitor setup, thinking it might be the cause. But even when I use only one monitor, the crash still occurs from time to time.
It always happens in the middle of editing, especially when I press Alt+Tab to switch windows.

Do you have any idea why this might be happening?
