Lightroom catalog in dropbox cache and will not reconnect with photos

My entire lightroom catalog is in a folder called dropbox cache and I cannot reconnect it to my photos which are on an external hard drive.  I have tried many fixes but nothing seems to work.  The folders in dropbox cache all have question marks and when I try to connect the missing folder to my hard drive - nothing happens.  The only thing that works is reconnecting individual photos manually.  I have over 100,000 photos and this would take forever.

LrC Catalog in any folder synched with the cloud (DropBox, OneDrive, etc.) is a bad idea. It is a disaster waiting to happen.

Tell us what you tried, in detail. Tell us what happened, in detail. If there was an error message, please quote the complete exact unedited error message. And get your catalog out of any folder related to DropBox or other cloud services.

I can't get it out of the Dropbox cache. I tried but I cannot see it in windows explorer.

The issue started during a trip where I used 2 1tb hard drives instead of my large 4tb drive with all my photos. At some point my 4tb catalog disappeared. When I reconnected the 4 to drive after getting back home it would no longer link to the catalog.

I synchronized but it created a duplicate of all photos which I eventually erased. The entire catalog is in proper order in the Dropbox cache but it will not link to hard drive.

Thanks for all this.  Before I do any of this, just a few comments

I never voluntarily put anything in the dropbox cache...it just happened and I have no idea how.

I never use Dropbox to manage anything related to lightroom.

When I am in lightroom I can see that my catalog is in C/dropbox/dropbox cache and when I click the folders I can see the thumbnails

When I go into Dropbox in windows explorer or even into dropbox online - I cannot see anything related to lightroom or a catalog

In windows explorer I allowed hidden files to be seen but I still cant see the catalog in the dropbox cache folder

I can see that my full lightroom catalog

If you never intended to include the Lightroom Classic catalog folder in Dropbox, but it’s in there, check the Dropbox settings to see if you enabled any of the Dropbox backup features. If you did, check which folders are set up in the Dropbox backup list, and either make sure the the Lightroom Classic catalog folder is not contained in those folders, or manually exclude the Lightroom Classic catalog folder from Dropbox backups.
