Lightroom lost ratings and colortags on all raw files in two folders

Today I discovered that Lightroom had lost all my ratings and color tags on all raw (dng) files in two of my folders. Very strange because I haven't done anything to the two folders at all. No renaming, moving or stuff like that and no illegal characters.

My tiff files (smart objects) in the same two folders on the other hand stil retains their ratings but have lost their colortags.

I have about 1.000 images in the two folders and are ofcourse anoyed that I have to reestablish the ratings in order to keep delivering 5 star images to the two clients. But it worries me even more that this is possible at all.

Anyone else have experienced this?

    You ask-

"I don’t think I fully understand how to you the backup to replace the file that has lost the ratings. What file is that? The catalog-file or some other file?"

cmgap is suggesting to find and open a backup catalog that has the flags and star rating for your folders- then [Export AS A CATALOG] the problematic folders, then reopen your master Catalog and 'pull in' this data by [Import FROM ANOTHER CATALOG].

This method does NOT involve anything else, including- Importing photos, moving or copying folders, moving images, pointing to a new location, etc.

The method is described in this blog from the Lightroom Queen-

    https://www.lightroomqueen.com/partial-restore-backup-catalog/

    Regards. My System: Windows-11, Lightroom-Classic 15.1.1, Photoshop 27.3.1, ACR 18.1.1, Lightroom 9.0, Lr-iOS 10.4.0, Bridge 16.0.2 .

If you flag images, create color/rating/start tags, and then go to apply a global IPTC change to the images as a group from the Library module, it will nullify the tags – thereby reverting to "flag" only. Perform all IPTC info globally first to all images, then perform other changes to tags from there.

So odd that this happened in only two folders. Do  you by chance have a recent backup that you can open to see if the ratings and flags are still there? If yes there are a couple of things  you can do. You can use the backup to replace the  file that has lost the ratings or you can export the collections and import (replace) them into the current catalog. You might do the latter if you've got a lot of work since your backup.

Hi and thanks for fast reply Yes I keep multiple backups. I don’t think I fully understand how to you the backup to replace the file that has lost the ratings. What file is that? The catalog-file or some other file? That is the reason I went for exporting the two folders as two separate export to new catalog. Then I imported the two folders to the “corrupted” catalog and noticed that the ratings and colortags worked fine in my collections. Then I deletet the two newly imported folders and pointing Lightroom the the old location of the two folders. So everything works again but as a paid photographer I don’t feel at ease using a programme where this can happen to me. It have never done this before and I am a long time user of Lightroom and it may never happen again but it doesn’t feel good to me. Thanks though for your fast and adequate reply. Kindly JR
