Lightroom (cloud) is very slow

Okay so I know this topic comes every once in a while so here's my take and I hope we can all come together and fix a bit of that problem.

 

Especially when I open the mask tab Lightroom asks a loooot of resources, I can hear my laptop fans going full blast and the mouse input is laggy (and I usually only have up to 5 masks but even just 3 masks is barely usable). But it also happens a lot in the color tab.

 

Performance wise I have put everything on my dedicated GPU (RTX 4070) in the Lr settings in High Performance. Cache is set to 50Go.

 

I shoot with a Lumix S5ii so it's maxed at 24Mp.

 

I just tested changing basic things on a photo and Lr immidiately used 80% of my CPU and 45% of my RAM and made the temperature go up very fast (according to my computer fans) so it looks like the bottle neck is the CPU but I have an Ultra 9 and I can't find any CPU settings in Lr...

 

EDIT: I also have tried turning off HAGS(Hardware accelerated gpu scheduling) and disabling full screen optimizations. No change. The problem is that most solutions on the internet are for Lightroom Classic...

Did someone ever find a solution for this? What are your own settings?

 

PC (laptop) config:
Intel Ultra 9
GPU : Intel Arc Graphics + NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 (8Gb)
RAM 32Go
SSD NVMe Samsung 990 PRO 2TB
Doing all the work on a second monitor.

It can handle 6K footage on Davinci but not a single photo in Lightroom?? 😭

Hi @Jack253734113gfn! Welcome to the community, and sorry to hear you're running into issues with Lightroom.

 

Your system should definitely be powerful enough to run Lightroom smoothly. Just to narrow things down a bit, does the issue only happen when you open the Mask tab? And does the same thing happen if Lightroom is the only app running, with everything else closed in the background?

 

As a first step, it might help to try a clean reinstall of Lightroom. 

 

1. Close Lightroom
2. Restart your computer
3. Open the Adobe Creative Cloud app and uninstall Lightroom
4. Restart your computer again
5. Reinstall Lightroom using the Creative Cloud app (don’t launch any other programs during this step)
6. Restart your computer one more time
7. Launch Lightroom
8. Wait about 5 minutes to let everything settle


If that doesn’t do the trick, the next thing we can try is resetting Lightroom’s preference file, since that file sticks around even after a reinstall. Here’s how to do that: https://adobe.ly/474W75Z

@Sameer K sadly I did all of that (and some was already done like assigning Lr to the dedicated GPU) and nothing has changed, Lr is still very laggy especially in the mask tab.
But I found the place it's the most laggy it's when I try to Ai erase something, after I've put my initial selection when I try to add to that selection with the brush (and before validating the whole selection to launch the erasing process) it just barely works, I can only add points with the brush and not strokes, the selections don't appear when I try to click and move the brush (or it moves at 0.1fps).

Thanks for following up and sharing all those detailed findings. We recently rolled out Lightroom 9.0, which includes several performance improvements. Please update to this latest version and test again.


After updating, here’s what I’d like you to do so we can escalate this properly to the Lightroom product team for review:
 • Update to Lightroom 9.0 using the Creative Cloud Desktop app.
 • Record a short screen capture of your workflow, starting from launching Lightroom to opening an image and performing the mask/AI erase actions where you experience lag.
 • Make sure to include the lag in brush responsiveness or visual refresh, as you described.


We’ll share your screen recording directly with the engineering team, who can review the behavior and system interaction in real time.
