P: MacBook Pro Apple M2 Max Laggy Liquify

MacBook Pro Apple M2 Max 96GB RAM - Photoshop 24.2
I recently changed to this new computer and photoshop is super laggy in tools like liquify and other filters, the brush lags a lot!
Even the zoom is slow.
Even my 2015 MacBook is faster at these tasks.

I don't know what is going on but something can't be right...

It's a pretty annoying and probably hard-to-replicate Liquify bug:

When there are other layers on top of the layer that's being liquified, all looks fine in the Liquify section, but on return to Photoshop UI the result is not applied.

This only happens about a third of the time.

The workaround is to move the layer that is about to be liquified to the top of the layer palette and move it back where it belongs after. 'Load last mesh' doesn't work either when this happens.

Anyone else seeing this?

Update - after watching this more, this Liquify not returning result is happening regardless of whether the layer is on top.

Sometimes it will return a result, sometimes not.

The only workaround I know at the moment is to try again and hope it will actually apply what I did in the filter window.

Try the following:

Go to Preferences/Technology Preview and check "Disable Native Canvas" - Restart Photoshop.
If you hold down the Alt key when you select Filter > Liquify... does it work correctly without crash?

Tried it:

1. Deactivate Native Canvas makes things really slow even on M2 Max (could be because I work in 16bit)

2. Starting Liquify with Alt key - I assume makes the filter CPU only. Yes it works without a crash, I'm not sure yet about the bug appearing or not (working correctly).

Both 1 & 2 slow down a lot, really losing the smoothness of working on a M2 Mac. So will come back to this once I deliver my project in a day or so, and try to replicate the bug with Alt + Liquify.

Just got a new MB Pro M2 Max and Photoshop 24.3.

Everything is lightning fast until I open Liquify and the mouse is unsusable. It lags in a way that makes it impossible to work. I use a Logitech Mouse but the trackpad is the same.

Everything works perfectly on my MB Pro M1 Pro.

Please fix it! I can't work!!!

Welcome to the Photoshop Community @ppdix. It'll help if you include more info about what you see. Could you please share a screen recording of this behavior & the system info of Photoshop from Help > System info > Copy & paste into a text document > upload to Creative Cloud files (https://assets.adobe.com/files) and share the link here.

As a test, press & hold the OPT key when you go to Filter > Liquify filter to skip using GPU & try again.

To be sure, you can try resetting Photoshop to the default.

Go to the location of the preference folder below and rename it to backup. https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html

macOS: In the Finder, hold down the Option key when using the Go menu > Library > Go to Preferences/Adobe Photoshop [version] Settings
Rename the Adobe Photoshop folder by adding a .old at the end. (Adobe Photoshop 2023 > Rename > Adobe Photoshop 2023. old)

These changes will give a fresh start to Photoshop as a fresh install.

Hi Sameer., thanks for your reply. I did everything you asked. Reset the preferences. It still lags in Liquify.

But holding the option key and bypassing the GPU seems to work but the redraw of the photo is slow but at least the cursor works fast as expected. It is clearly a GPU issue with M2 Max.

I have this same issue on the M2 Pro (Mini). Mouse lag (Temp disabling the GPU works). When I forgot to disable and zooming in too fast I ended up having to force quit.

I think PS is only optimised for the M1 silicon.

Photoshop 2022 liquify still works fine, so I switch to that when I need it. But there are things in 2022 that don't work right, so then I switch to 2023 😞

Same here, it stopped for a bit, but it's restarted again and I don't have time to constantly reset my preferences. I also don't want to turn off the GPU as this messes other stuff up. It's a total pain and really slowing me down, please fix. Apple Silicon M2 Max 96GB RAM, 1.75TB available space.

I have the exact same problem, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't, I always see the changes in the preview window but sometimes when I press ok it doesn't show the results, like I didn't do anything. I can't figure out what the problem is because it only happens sometimes. It's frustrating.

I have a Mac Mini M2 16GB RAM 256G SSD and Photoshop 24.3, the liquify tool is also super laggy. I have tried to disable/enable native canvas, or to move the scratch disk to another extended large SSD, or to totally re-install the OS and PS, none of these approaches works. Only turing off GPU works but the face detection have to be disabled.
