P: Program error when saving, lag when zooming, changes not reflecting in document window (macOS)

LEGEND ,
Dec 09, 2020 Dec 09, 2020

Since the 22.1 update, MAJOR bugs:

- ‘could not save because of a program error’ when saving, work around: hiding a few layers or folders.

- major lag when zooming in

- actions and changes delay in showing, to the point where they never show up - once I close the document and quit Photoshop and go back in the changes are  visible.

what’s going on??

Please install 22.1.1 which was released late last night. It contains a fix for program errors.

Reposting this from *ishal ismail, which solved the problem for me. Many thanks, Ishal!

Here is my fix, I'm on macOS Catalina V10.15.6, PS V22. I gave PS Full Disk Access and restarted the system, seems like it has fixed the problem for now.

You can go to System preferences > Security & Privacy > Full Disk Access ( You can find it on the left side pane > and add PS to the list by pressing the small + icon you can find on the bottom of the left-side pane.

Also, you need to unlock the pri

This is very challenging and annoying, whenever I start creating lots of layers (necessary for my artwork), photoshop bugs out and says "can't save file due to program error". I've had to uninstall and reinstall Photoshop, try a bunch of different external drives, and it will work temporarily and then all of a sudden go back. The only solution I've seen on here that works is making all your layers invisible and except the background layer and saving. But I'm worried about my work if this continues.

Is this a bug? Or problem with my computer?

@JeffreyTranberry Layers is on - can't save. Layers off - can save. Can't merge.
What's so difficult tracking this?
Simply trying to place more hair, less than 400mb psd, background and 2 layer&mask only.
I did a more than 4GB psb with more than 25 layers with render, copy and such in october, and didn't had a single problem.
Sorry for it, not wanting to bitching about it, but this problem driving me crazy, can't work, I can't belive in 2020 "there is an error" kind of messsages still exist not knowing what's the problem.
I know I'm only a hobbyist, but it looks like a common problem not a rare one... And to be honest, I pay a good amount of money for it.
As I read and experienced, it is like this for weeks.
Version 22.1 on Win10, full pack, having problem since the latest update.

*dralt  It's not a simple as you might think. We've collected a number of files and don't have any problems working on or saving the files that have been provided - except in one case where the preferences (machineprefs.psp) were in a weird state.

Have you tried the troubleshooting steps in my official answer (one of the steps is to restore prefs)?

Dear Jeffrey
Not just saving has problem, can't even merge.
Tried many things, on twitter I got response from AdobeCare and truly thankful for them and You for answer, seriously thanks.
But still, aside from reinstall I tried - I think - everything You or on twitter was mentioned.
renamed thus disabled the unified folder, hiding layer is not a solution bc I need them obviously, tried the preferences You mentioned.
Went back an earlier saving tried merge and got the problem.
Ok, it's a complex problem but why adobe don't have a simple change back solution, I must have to reinstall for an earlier version. (or maybe I'm mistaken and there is a way for switch back?)

Same problem. We had to flatten every layer in order to finally be able to save the file. Now all our layers are rasterized. Better than losing and rebuilding, but not acceptable with no patch before the holidays. OSX 10.15.4 / PS 22.1.0

We are open to a PS test build as we use this program daily and on large print files. Please advise when there is a patch or update to fix this. Thanks.

The same is happening to me. At first, my Photoshop was constantly crashing which I managed to resolve by uninstalling and reinstalling. But now every time I use it, the program error comes up... very frustrating.

@JeffreyTranberry

Same issue is happening with me, too. Using OS, tried pasting as Pixels from Illustrator and I am unable to merge layers, zoom in or save my file.

Could I please be added to the initiative?

This is really weird, but I followed the suggestion from this link to turn off all the layers, then save the file. That worked. But as soon as I turned all the layers back on, I couldn't save (because of a program error) again. So I turned them all off, then turned them back on one at a time and saved after each new layer was visible. This worked until I hit one single layer that triggered the error. (It was a raster layer - not a smart object, no masks, not a vector, no effects. It WAS using the layer below as a clipping mask - but no other layers being clipped had triggered the error ¯\_(ツ)_/¯). After deleting that layer and rebuilding it, I was able to save the document without a problem.

@JeffreyTranberry  what utter nonsense. hard to track....

i have 4 friends who have the same issues with PS.

how can such a buggy version  be released?

because adobe does no proper beta testing.

these errors are so obvious on so many system.... how can they be missed?

i am honestly sick of the excuses.

while adobe makes billions it cost creatives billions of dollars in lost work hours. 😞

Hello Photoshop development team,

I just ran into an issue where I get an error message preventing me from saving after I use the crop tool.

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Create a new PS file
  2. Save as a PSB (large document format)
  3. Make 1 or many changes that DO NOT include a crop
  4. Save file again (saves successfully)
  5. Crop with the 'Delete Cropped Pixels' checkbox unchecked
  6. Try to save file
  7. File cannot be saved with error message: "Could not save [FILENAME] because of a program error." (see screenshot)

Note that if I undo the crop adjustment, I can save the file successfully.

@JeffreyTranberry

Please include me in the list of folks to try the patch. I'm getting errors on merging layers and saving files. I've tried the fixes w/o result. It's frustrating to lose work. Thanks

I am using Photoshop 22.1.0 on a recently purchased Mac Airbook running MacOS Big Sur 11.1.

I routinely use merge layers to create animations, my typical approach being to copy a group of layers, adjust the layers, then merge the group to create one of the frames of the animation.

I just finished such an exercise, and copied the source file to create a slight variation. But whenever I try to merge the group, I get a "Cannot complete request because of a program error."

I can merge small groups of layers, but when I get up to 19, it flunks out again. Though some particular layers seem to poison the merge, failure coming for a much smaller number.

I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling Photoshop, clearing the preferences, and recreating the file from scratch.  None of these things has made a difference. What else can I try to resolve this issue?

@JeffreyTranberry Please invite me to the test build program to pinpoint and fix this, "can't save due to program error" bug. Glad to help by sending additional generated logging. Photoshop is important to everyone's economy here, and the sooner it is stable the better we will all be for it. Currently returned to PS 2020 - will put it through its pace today and see what happens. I am working on an Intel iMac Pro running Big Sur with 64 GB of RAM and 16GB of VRAM on a compatible Radeon Pro Vega 64 video card if that helps. I can also set up and get test logs on a 2013 Mac Pro running Mojave using a Fire Pro video card with 3GB of vRAM and 64GB of system RAM.

I have been experiencing an issue where I am unable to save my project after making a layer larger, it does save if I disable the visibility but want to understand why this is and why my photoshop will slow or the viewport will freeze if I zoom in with the layer visible. I could really use some help as this has caused my production to slow to a crawl to work with and around these issues.

Hello,
I am having a few issues that are causing me a lot of problems. I need Photoshop to print to my sublimation printer and right now, I can't do that. When I try to save a file, I get this error. This happens to any file I have.
I also cannot edit layers. If I hide a layer, it doesn't go anywhere. It's like its lagging behind. I try to transform or move something and nothing happens. It's painful and casuing me a lot of issues with trying to get my orders made. Please help.
