Bug: can't write Font name in selection field, text/graphics

Community Beginner ,
Nov 04, 2024 Nov 04, 2024

I do a lot of text work in Premiere Pro and I've encountered an extremely frustrating new bug. When you're choosing a font, the field doesn't allow you to add more than one letter at a time. I have to physically click the field again to be able to write the next letter. If I want to choose FUTURA, I have to click the font field 6 times to be able to write it. I've tried resetting cache and all those ordeals etc. etc. as well. Please attend to this....

Hi @sinadolati

Thanks for submitting your bug report. I have been able to reproduce this all too easily. It is a very frustrating bug as you have to click back into the search font box after every letter you type. I can not even type fast enough to get 2 letters in a row to search. I have created a ticket for this and sent it off to our engineer team. I hope we can help you soon. Sorry for the frustration!

@sinadolati  We are still looking into the matter. I know your OS was

Operating system - macOS Sonoma 14.4.1

When I reproduced this error as you have shown I was also on Sonoma. I am currently on Sequioa 15 and can no longer reproduce it. It may have to do with the OS. We will try to narrow it down soon and I will get back to you.

Hi @sinadolati ! Your video really helped! Thanks for that. The bug is in the Effect Controls panel. We'll look into it. In the meantime I suggest you use the Properties panel instead of the Effect Controls.

  • Issue - Font selection field doesn't allow you type full word in one go
  • Adobe Premiere Pro version number: Version 25.0.0 (Build 61)
  • Operating system - macOS Sonoma 14.4.1
  • System Info: CPU, GPU, RAM, HD:
    • Apple M3 Max 64 GB unified ram, internal SSD
  • Video format: Unsure but irrelevant to this issue, happens with multiple projects
  • Workflow details: Simple social media type video with text over it, but again irrelevant, happens with multiple projects
  • Steps to reproduce - (Very important!) Very simple, I typically click T as the text shortcut, and when I hover over to choose the font, as I try to type in the font name, this happens.
  • Expected result - Field should allow you to type in the font name fully
  • Actual result -  Field allows me to type one letter, then i have to click the field again to type in one more letter, again and again

Hi @sinadolati

I wanted to check in on this since I have been working with support they are having trouble reproducing this error. I am also no longer to reproduce this error. Can you give this a try today and if you are still having this issue send us a screen recording of the problem when it occurs? I did this a few weeks ago and was running into exactly what you had described and today I can not reproduce this error.

Let us know how it is going for you,

Thank you

Ian

Lately with the new update to Premiere Pro 25.1.0 (build 73)  I'm trying to change the font on some text, and when I type the name of the new font into the font name box only one letter at a time is typing, I have to keep selecting the font box.

It used to be fine I could type the entire name of the font into the font box and it would find the font I'm after. Now I have to keep clicking the font box....

Also, you can't select the exact size of font that you want any more, the size has been removed and there is only a slider. this is very annoying!

Hi @sinadolati and @kasimirz!

Happy to let you know that we have a fix in beta build 105. Unless we find anything bad while it's in beta this is then queued for the next official release of Premiere Pro.

If you create some text in Premiere and then try and change the font by typing into the font combo box, after every character you enter on the keyboard, the focus moves to the refined selection of the fonts, so you then have to click back into the combo box text field to further refine it and enter another character.

Every other Adobe app (and every other app in existence) keeps the focus on the text entry field and then allows you to use the arrow keys to move down the selected items below or just hit enter to select the first item.

How to reproduce

1. Create a text layer with the text "Your Sample Text"

2. Then go to Effect Control Panel > Text (Your Sample Text) > Source Text and click into the font combo box - the drop-down part will open and the current font name will be selected in the text field part of the control

3. Try and type multiple characters in the text field control - after the first character is typed, any further keyboard characters do not appear.

4. To enter more characters, you must use the mouse to click back into the text field area of the combo box - you must do this after every character

This makes it pretty impossible to use effectively as a single character never refines the selection close to what you want unless you always want Academy Engraved T 😉

As long as I can remember the text search has never worked properly.

@Rob Claisse,

This is a bug that occurred with 25.0 and 25.1. It may only be Mac; I cannot replicate on Win10.

https://community.adobe.com/t5/premiere-pro-bugs/bug-can-t-write-font-name-in-selection-field-text-g...

The workaround is to make that change in the Properties panel rather than Effect Controls.

A fix is in the Beta, and will be in the next Release.

Ann, Ah. So two issues:

1 - Your search issue: in both options (Effect Controls and Properties), the font drop down finds anything that matches and displays alphabetically.

2 - The current bug: after typing each letter, the box looses focus and you must click back to type a second/third letter, etc.

I've had this problem with the last few versions of Premiere. When I'm searching for a font to use for a title, it freezes up after I type each letter. And it seems to leave the dialogue box after each letter.

So if I try to type "Times New Roman" into the dialogue box it will type "T" and then it will do all sorts of stuff with the remaining letters, since the cursor is no longer in the dialogue box. So anytime I'm searching for a font, I need to type each letter slowly: "T" then wait a second, then click back into the box, "I" then wait a second, click back in, "M", etc. It takes forever.

This seemed like an obvious bug so I was just waiting for it to be fixed, but it's been a while now and I'm still dealing with this. So here we are. Anyone else have this problem? Am I doing something wrong?

That would be so frustrating  ... I've seen a couple others post about having this, so you're not totally alone.

But I've never had this happen on my PC desktop or laptop, so I can't replicate.

@kevina41766135,

As Neil says, a known issue:

https://community.adobe.com/t5/premiere-pro-bugs/bug-can-t-write-font-name-in-selection-field-text-g...

This appears to affect only Mac. The fix is in the Beta and will be in a next release. The workaround is to use the Properties panel.
