Essential graphics is not color managed

At our prod company we decided to use After effects as color managed.

We use sRGB working space with display color management on.

Since Premiere added color management settings in Lumetri, we choose Quicktime 1.96 as a viewer gamma with "display color managment" checked.

So... The gamma/gamut we see in premiere's preview from sRGB renders from Afx is correct when exported and watched on quicktime, frame-io and youtube.

But !

When we export an essential graphics from after effects, it is not color managed in Premiere. So the colors don't match.

Could you please give us this option.

Right now we can't get essential graphics to look the same in premiere that it was in afx. Defeating its purpose.

First comment, is your system will work as long as everyone that views your output is on Macs, but even then, without the newer Refence modes. As the newer "reference mode" Macs will use gamma 2.4 for Rec.709 with the HDTV setting.

So all us PC and Android or full-broadcast setup folks won't see your "correct" image. Are you aware of that issue? And yea, it's a messy thing.

There are some issues between the Ae and Premiere color management setups. In another thread, a staffer suggested some things and I'm struggling to remember who that was.

@Bruce Bullis can get assistance on this I believe. And of course @Tranquil_Cosmos157F is another knowledgeable person with Ae/Premiere workflows.

I appreciate your confidence, and have zero clues about color management. We should listen to Jarle. 🙂

But you're also knowledgeable on who is knowledgeable, and bring them to the discussion ... 😉

Thanks Neil. Always prompt to help on that subject 🙂

I forgot to precise that we have mac and pc here and we have checked this workflow on both.

This color space choice was the only one to give us a color/contrast similarity for our pipeline :

Afx preview->afx rendered file

this file in Premiere's preview->Premiere's exported file viewed in Quicktime, Youtube, Insta, TikTok, frameio players.

(on all diplays, mac/pc screens, phones etc...)

No more gamma shift !

"Similar" colors, tint, saturation.

Same with Davinci Resolve where in a sRGB working space, the exported videos with NCLC tags to "Color Space : P3"  / "Gamma Tag : sRGB" look exactly like in the in software preview.

So, after years, of pulling my hair to have consitency, I finally found this solution that is perfectly working from our client's color palette to the played final video on social networks.

But!

Only essential graphics doesn't play by the rules, because... it has no setting to color space it. bummer.

That's ... an interesting solution. Glad it works for you of course, but I've seen others try it and they couldn't make it work. So doubly fascinating.

I've tested that, and I don't get consistent results even across PC/Android depending on app or browser. And that's off my main machine, which is broadcast-standard setup.

And on mine, the Essential Graphics totally follows the CM set for the sequence ... another curious difference.

I realize that I'm somewhat odd, because ... I get fascinated by things like this. When I've got work to get out, I have trouble trying to puzzle something like this out instead! The missus is never amused by this behavior, I might note ...  😉

What were the color settings in After Effects when the MOGRTs were made?
