Mask tracking zero progress

Hello,

I applied the Gaussian Blur effect on a video clip and used the pen tool to apply a mask around a number plate. I then hit the play button to track the mask as the car moves but the progress bar doesn't show any progress. When I select "Stop" I am then unable to select track again as all the buttons are greyed out.

I'm using M1 Max so I don't think it is an isssue with memory.

Thanks,

I found a solution that worked for me.

I made a mask around my subject using 'opacity' so this may differ by effect.

I copied my opacity mask then nested the clip and pasted the mask from the original onto the nested clip. Tracking worked fine and had no issues from there.

Hope this helps someone.

Trust me nesting was the first thing I tried - but it doesnt work. However,
even if it did work nesting is not a solution. its a bandaid that ads a
kink into the workflow

Yup - it's not good enough, even if it did work consistently.

The only thing I've been able to do that does work consistently is save, quit Premiere, reopen project. Simply not viable long-term.

I was having this same issue. What I did, that seemed to work, is I would save what I had done, closed the project and reopened it. The first thing I did after reopening was hit try to track the mask I made and it worked. It's worked for me so far, maybe not a permanent solution but it gets the job done.

Hope this helps.

I've been having this same issue for weeks now. I've found success if you nest the clip you are trying to do the motion tracking on. It seems to force it to work for some reason.

I am late to this, as i am fairly new to Premiere Pro, trying to learn Color Correction/Grading and it drive me nut, as when i started to play with 1-2 weeks ago was all fine, then since a few days it started doing this. Then all of a sudden i realised what i did differently, as an habbit to work in After-Effects to speed preview, i had lower Preview Resolution set on the first 2 clicps i explored masking as it was having preview lag, and now i had it at full since clisp are faster, so i did a test.

When Preview Resoltuion is set at Full or 1/2, mask trackign stops, as if, running out or memory or not too sure. But when i drop it to 1/8, tracking goes all teh way through. Did a few test back and forth, delete my mask keydrames, retried, raising Preview Res to 1/2 or Full, tracked, it stoped, deleted the maks keyframes, dropes PRev. Res to 1/8, tracked all teh way  through, rinse and repeat a few times and each time same result. So long story short on my side, 1/8 preview res. gives me no issue with Mask Tracking.

I was having the same issue, I fixed it by putting the clip on a video track with no other clips under or above it.

Add a new mask, right click and cut, press original mask and start progress. Works for me as well. The person who found this out, bravo!

This is nuts and I can't believe a bug on such a prevalent effect has taken so long for Adobe to deal with! I am just learning Premiere and thought I was really messing up so it's at least a relief to find this thread.

This is one of the oldest bugs and the most annoying. I've had it for years now. Still today, it's happening to me. Restarting Premiere fixes it sometimes. or Reseting the workspace to a saved layout.

same issue.  v23.6.4 and v24.1

Mask will not track forward, even frame by frame.  The play / forward options grey out after one attempt and I need to delete the effect and re-apply to have another go at.

Ishan, Adobe Employees, it's been nearly two years since this was reported.  What's going on?  This is a big feature that we're paying for and the time we've wasted on this bug with blind trial and error and zero follow up from your camp is a bad look for Adobe.

Still a bug in v24.3.0 -- absolutely disables any kind of intelligent masking workflow -- Adobe, what gives?

I was having the same issue for hours, I found that if I created a new mask and cut the original track forward and backward was availabl. However if you start the tracking process on the first frame of the video it will not work so begin tracking on the second frame on a new mask and you should be good. Hope this works

I'm still having the same issue. Even on an M3 Macbook Pro with Premiere Pro 2024 24.4.1 (Build 2).

This is the same issue I've been having for years with Premiere Pro. I'm currently on Premiere Pro 2024 24.4.1 (Build 2), and the tracking mask path gets stuck in "Progress..." all the time while trying to track and blur faces with the Gaussian Blur effect. Sometimes restarting Premiere fixes it, but most of the time it doesn't.
