Any video I upload gets the 'audio playback failed' error message (and says Premiere Pro could not start audio playback errror code 1609891836) when you click play. The app doesn't recognise audio in any of my videos and wouldn't even play. Please see attached image. Can you please help me troubleshoot?
Hi, I had the same problem and I solved it. I hope you can do it the same way I did:
If you go to Preferences -> Media Cache, I discovered that the cache was being stored on my "(D:) drive" but my "(D:) drive" was full. In that case, I think premiere prioritized the image because there wasn’t enough space to import the sounds. My solution? As absurd as it sounds... was to delete the games. I managed to free up 130GB of disk space, and when I reopened Premiere, the error "1609891836" stopped appea
...Hi @TLWestgate68 and @TLWestgate68,
i have heard that this error is triggered because the drive where your media cache is saved is full. You might first note the media cache's location and delete any files stacking up there. You can even press Shift at launch and delete all the media cache from the Reset Options dialog box. See if deleting items on the media cache drive (including the current and recent media cache files) might help squash this bug. Let me know!
Thanks,
Kevin

Hello I am having exactly the same problem. I have tried almost all the ways to fix it, but it didn't work.
I have cleaned cache, changed cache folder name and location, resinstalled Premiere Pro, reinstalled whole Adobe pack and even with clean adobe, Installed studio Nvidia driver, downgraded to an older driver, but it doesn't work. I have tried all possible hardware settings none of them work or work properly, only SRT mode started playing, but without any sound, it just ignores the audio line.
I suspect it's not about adobe, but anyways it started since July 2024
But the most annoying part is that it was working years without problems and since July 2024 it started to behave like this.

I don't know what's changed but it seemed to have resolved itself. The Audio Hardware are just set to System Default (input and output) and have not changed any. So, if it happens again, I'll update this. Odd, huh.

I'm having the same issue with playback and also exporting audio. I've had to output via Media Encoder to get rendered audio in my exported videos. I've run the system compatability and no issues reported there.

Hi Neil Wieteska,
We're sorry to hear about this. Is this happening with any specific media or all of them? Could you please share a download link for one of the sample media with which you are experiencing this issue? It will help us to diagnose the issue properly.
Thanks,
Sumeet

It happens with mp4. Also with wav and audio on a prores file. Afraid I can't share due to client material.

Also, no issue with any of these files in other applications

Thanks for the details. Please share the exact version of Premiere Pro that you are using & the camera/external recorder on which these files were captured. Also, for testing purposes, please try disabling hardware accelerated decoding (Premiere Pro > Settings > Media) to check if it's working properly. Please note that you would need to restart Premiere Pro after disabling it from Settings.

Premier version 24.5.0
Sorry should have said that

Tried disabling hardwarw accelerated decoding. Same issue. Made no difference. one file is a CGI sequence, so the music must have been edited on to the visuals.
I've just loaded a wav file from a music library and that plays.

So, I'm now in the position where a wav file will not play. I have an edit start and complete using this music file. How do you suggest I proceed with this?

I've gone back to Premier version 23.6.7 where the audio will play. Really.

ok, I think I know what the issue was. I've gone back to Premier version 24.5.0 and let the application generate all the peak files. I then imported the wav file and it now plays.

I thought I'd sorted this, but still having issues. Audio is not exporting in one project, having to export via AME, and in another project, audio from a MP4 now plays in the source window, but fails with the same error code, on the sequence timeline.

Here's a screen shot of audio information ( or at least what Premier thinks of it)

And another screen shot of prores files

Any ideas?

Same problem on Intel Windows 11 Machine. Have cycled through audio devices (Nvidia/Realtek) and hardware acceleration, drawing waveforms, basically every button and it's completely hit or miss as to what works and what doesn't. Old Intel MacBook Pro seems unaffected. Both on 25.5.0

Hi, I had the same problem and I solved it. I hope you can do it the same way I did:

I hope this helps.
Best regards.

After the latest update my Premiere Pro will not read, display, nor playback audio from MP4 files. I receive the following error code -1609891836.
BRAW and MOV files are fine. After Effects also does not read/play audio from MP4s. But Audition will read the audio tracks. This is on my Windows 10 machine.
The same MP4 files, however, play and edit fine on my Macbook. What gives?

I have this same issue on my PC, I tried solving it a month (June 3rd) ago and posted on here for help with no luck. Surprisingly, the project I was trying to create works on my older, less powerful laptop with less RAM and no graphics card. it seems to be a new update as when I made my ticket, I dont believe there were any, but now I've seen a few.
I think one person figured their issue out and posted it. maybe it'll help you.
