P: Specific Presets do Not Save when I exit and return from the application (PREMIERE PRO)

Summary of the issue:

When I import specific effects presets in Premiere Pro, they do not save after I exit and return to the application. While some effects within the preset do save, certain specific ones, such as the "shake" effect, are not saved.

Steps to reproduce the bug:

  1. Import a custom preset that includes multiple effects, including the "shake" effect.
  2. Exit Premiere Pro.
  3. Open Premiere Pro again and check if the effects have been saved.

Expected result:

All imported effects, including the specific "shake" effect, should be saved and available when I reopen Premiere Pro.

Actual result:

The "shake" effect (and some other specific effects) is not saved, even though other effects within the preset are retained.

Additional information:

  • I am not using any third-party plugins or panels.
  • Please find my system specs and exact Premiere Pro version below: Windows 11, Premiere 24.6.1.

Somehow, those are being 'seen' by the program. Which can be either it doesn't know to look where you are putting them, or a permissions issue, where Premiere can't access that file.

I've had permisisons issues in the past, and it was a dang nasty thing to get sorted completely done. In my case, it involved an update to Microsoft OneDrive ... where it took over all my 'user' folders.

After figuring that out, I tried multiple setting changes to OneDrive, none worked. Finally, I had to nuke OneDrive itself. And it took something like three days to actually KILL the blame thing.

But once gone, gee, my Adobe apps, presets, keyboard shorts, custom workspaces all worked perfectly again.

So ... sometimes ya gotta look around a bit. Sadly.

I have the same exact issue since yesterday and I've tried everything you listed, still didn't find any solution on the internet and even ChatGPT couldn't help me. We are probably going to need to wait for a fix...

Have you installed the public beta? First day of Adobe MAX is October 14, and they drop the entire new CC suite for opening day of MAX.

So we've probably had the last real 24.x build now. And there are many changes in the 25.x series. I'm hoping this is fixed there, but if you tried it, you could see.

Everytime I close premiere pro (2024) any preset I have made disappears from the preset ben in the effects tab. So for example if I use gaussian blur and make a preset out of it, it will appear in the Presets ben, as it is supposed to. Then when I restart Premiere, it is no longer there. This just started happening on the latest update. I have tried:

  1.  Dumping cash from everywhere
  2.  Reinstaling Premiere
  3.  Putting made presets in a folder in the presets ben
  4.  Praying...

No joy on any of the above.

Any thoughts?

Hello,

It's october the 14th, I waited on the v25 to be released, and I still have this exact same issue. I've read hundreds of threads talking about this issue, tried everything and nothing works. The preset behavior is like the one described : I have the same ULTIMATE EARTHQUAKE preset I downloaded from Cinecom and those exact 2 presets are the only ones remaining in the folder when restarting Premiere Pro. For some presets I've imported (which are folders so you have multiple presets within), only one stays, for other 80% of the presets stay. And it always the same presets per imported folder. I'm lost, I want to edit, I don't know what to do. Please help.

Yea I also checked this new update and the issues still remain. And cinecom not responding probably indicates it's an issues in their side as well I don't know how. Either way it's over for us choom we got to zero ourselves if we want to get back to editing with efficiency.

Hi,

I am also having the same issue with this preset pack and some of my other packs as well. I also waited to see if v25 would fix these issues. So far it's still making presets disappear every time I restart Premiere Pro or when I close project and reopen it. Definitely seems to be an Adobe bug though since this issue is more recent from what I observe.

Only work around so far is to just reimport the presets. However, it is a bit annoying having to do that every time since I use presets frequently for my workflow. Really hope there is a permanent fix for this somewhere or Adobe can find out what's causing this.

"Adobe" isn't responsible for the work of third parties, people. Period.

I've had the full RedGiant Universe for years. About two years ago, the Looks effect bonked. If you apply it, and tap the Edit option, it ... bonks. Doesn't open, locks up Premiere. You have to force closure.

I've had plenty of communications with RedGiant/Maxon, they're quite aware of this. A couple employees quail to see me come to their booth every NAB/Vegas. It apparently hits some but not all Looks users, I don't know if more PC than Mac.  And ... they've not done a blessed thing to fix it. Thankfully, I don't have any interest in using their "Look" creation, and all the things that I do use work fine.

But still, it's annoying. And Adobe can't do spit about it because it ain't their stuff.

Cinecom's been noted for not giving stellar support past sales. And if their presets don''t 'stick' when installed, there's either an issue with their instructions not being correct, or the 'header' of their files has issues that affect probably the OS recognition process.

That's been the case over the years with a goodly number of preset/transition pack vendors.

One continual issue ... some vendors have "packs" that so often installed fine on Macs, but bonked for many PC users ... because again, either the instructions for PC installation missed something on account of poor Windows experience of the vendors, or ... they missed something in the header code used by the OS and programs.

And again, such things can only be fixed by the vendor.

So go pester Cinecom like crazy. Make them actually support their product!

good vendor is Autokroma, who makes a BRAW plugin. And actually provides better support for the BlackMagic freebie plugin than BlackMagic does. Now, that's support.

I recently updated to version 25 after I updated After Effects, not knowing it would be incompatible with my current version of Premiere, so basically FORCED me to update to the latest version. Since doing so, a lot of effect presets I previously had saved in Premiere have just disappeared. I can import and then use the presets fine, but frustratingly, any time I close and re-open my project they disappear again and I have to re-import the presets. The only answer that seems to exist was on another forum post, which is now dead. I'm currently using Windows 10.

Yeah it's not working, because I already updated to 25 before seeing this, and after uninstalling 25 then installing 24 to see if the missing presets possibly show up there, they don't and they still don't save after importing them, quitting and reopening Premiere.

Hi @João Vitor Lindo,

Thanks for posting all the details. Is it possible that these presets contain effects that were in the Obsolete category? If so, that may be at the heart of the issue. Please check and let us know.

Thanks,
Kevin

I too am having this issue for a couple of months. And yes I am using the camera shake effect.  I use it in most of my videos so it is frustrating having to reimport after each Premiere start.  Also the imports take forever to load.

The only thing I have found to work is to create a new custom bin and manually drag the camera shake effects that I use to this custom bin.  So far, every time I start Premiere they are in there.  But the one caveat is I CANT RENAME THE CUSTOM BIN! I try to rename it to "Camera Shake" and every time I restart it reverts back to the default 'Custom Bin 01'   The reason I can't rename it is probably related to the original issue somehow

Regardless, at least for now I have found a way to not have to import the effects each time I start Premiere.  Hope this helps.

Some of you are focusing on and blaming the wrong parties here. This issue has nothing to do with 3rd party plugins such as Cinecom. I've been having this issue for the entire year using ONLY the built in premiere pro effects.

For example, I'll apply a transform effect, make 2 keyframes for the scale, and then save it as preset, close and re-open premiere pro, and the effect is gone.

If I make a custom Bin and drag the effect to the custom bin and close and re-open premiere pro, what happens is the effect in the Presets bin is GONE but the effect in the custom bin is still there, which is really odd.

Now here is where it's really confusing, one of my Transform effect presets did save and is permanently there, but every new transform effect I try to save as a preset just disappears.

Here is a followup to my last reply about my transform effects disappearing. This PARTIALLY solves the issue for me and hopefully this gives the Adobe team some sort of clue as to what the issue is.

If I make a new transform effect from the effects tab and save it as a preset, it now stays.

However, if I apply the Transform effect using a 3rd party plugin such as Knight of the Editing table's Excalibur, the effect disappears once saved as a preset. For those who don't know, Excalibur brings up a contextual menu that lets you search your effects and apply it to a selected clip.

That means when I import a preset that I've made in the past, and then close Premiere, if some of them disappear and some stay, that means the effects that disappeared were the ones I applied using Excalibur.  In 2022 when I made these presets using Excalibur, there was no issue, but for some reason the last 2 versions of Premiere has broken it. Even making a new preset now with an effect applied by Excalibur doesn't work.

HOWEVER, this so far only applies to the transform effect. Any other effect I apply using Excalibur and make a preset out of does not have this issue (Crop and Gaussian blur worked for example). It's possible there are more effects that are affected this way that I haven't encountered yet.

So this brings me to one conclusion: There is a tainted variation of the transform effect and various effects, depending how they were originally applied. In my case it's being applied by Excalibur. In other peoples cases, you may have a preset that was also originally made with Excalibur or a similar plugin that caused it to be tainted. If I apply the old preset onto a new clip, and then save that as a new preset with a new name, that tainted effect still does not save.

I HAVE FOUND THE SOURCE OF THE ISSUE + A WORK AROUND FOR DISAPPEARING PRESETS UPON CLOSING AND OPENING PREMIERE.

(Sorry, this is for the SEO so people can find this)

@R Neil Haugen I haven't contacted the Folks at Knights yet but, but at best they'd only be able to provide a work around for my specfic scenario, and not solve the primary issue with everyone else using other presets.

I believe the primary cause of the presets not being saved is due to them using the obsolete versions of an effect.

Remember how at one point, premiere used to have 2 versions of the "Transform" effect in the effects tab? There was Transform and Transform (obsolete). My guess is that a lot of these broken presets are broken because they utilized the obsolete version of their effects (and for some reason, Excalibur is still drawing upon the obsolete Transform effect).

To prove this theory correct, I imported an old preset that uses a 100% obsolete effect, which is the garbage matte. Importing and implementing it works fine. Upon re-opening premiere, it disappears. Ok so that solves my personal issue, but what about everyone else with their broken presets that they purchased from 3rd parties

This is the solution:

1. Import your Presets as always.
2. Apply the broken presets to any random clip.
3. In the effects control panel, select all of the effects from the applied preset + select the OPACITY.
4. Save new preset.

I can confirm this works for both my obsolete transform effects + the garbage matte effects. Previously they both disappeared, but after this work around, they no longer disappear. The reason I chose Opacity is because this setting is generally untouched at 100%, but you can use Motion or Time Remapping if you wish.
