"Matrix cannot be inverted" error when trying to open Project window

Community Beginner ,
Mar 10, 2024 Mar 10, 2024

I have a lot of old Premiere projects (CS6) that I go back to in order to update older shows to newer versions. I have been using Premiere Pro Creative Cloud now for about 3 years and this issue started happenning since the most recent update to 24.2.1. Normally when I open one of my old CS6 projects, I am told the project is not compatible with the new version of Premiere and to save it as a new project. I rename and accept the new project file and after locating and loading the media I can go about my business updating the content.

However, since the latest update, after locating and loading the media an error pops up saying "Matrix cannot be inverted." After the project loads, the Project window is not displayed. But when I go to Window --> Projects and select the project I'm working on, I get the "Matrix cannot be inverted" error message again and the project window does not display. Also, when there was just one project listed under Window --> Projects the first time I go there, subsequent checks show duplicate listings for the same project. This has happened with multiple CS6 projects that I have tried to open in this way.

While I have searched for this error to try to find a solution, no one seems to be reporting seeing this error for the same situation as I am here. I have tried the solutions offfered to others, but none of them have worked. This includes switching to another workspace and back and resetting preferences. I reverted to version 20.0.3 and have been able to open, convert, and edit  a CS6 project with no problems. So, while that is a solution, it does not keep me up to date with the app which is the whole point of this subscription thing. So please fix this Adobe.

Hi @Afsheen24961793qqpl,

Thanks for reporting the issue. The team is already working on the bug, as evidenced by the fix in the current Beta (thank you for reporting @Ann Bens).

Look for a fix in an upcoming version of Premiere Pro. I appreciate you reporting the bug. I am sorry for the frustration this is causing you. Let the community know if we can help you further.

Thanks,
Kevin

I just ran into ths error trying to load a CS6 project.  It has DV AVI files, but from the look of it that has nothing to do with it. The media loaded into AME and rendered just fine.

Project window fails to load and when invoked, the error pops up.

Just a quick thought on this bug and an R.O.T. (rule of thumb) I've learned over the years: @Afsheen24961793qqpl@t.linn@MisterAdvent@Jon382271692vuq@Ann Bens.

Using project files from years ago to maintain a legacy post-production workflow is not optimal. The files will become more complex and challenging to maintain as the years pass. Every few versions, find the time to keep your project files up to date in more current versions so they can be opened continually on successive versions.

I hope this advice may help you prevent losing mission-critical assets.

Cheers,
Kevin

@Kevin-Monahan Yes, this a good ROT but what about all the tutorial videos and associated project files that now no longer work correctly due to this bug? I can't even view the project in the way it is described in the tutorial. It is making it very difficult to learn.

Oh, which tutorials are you referring to? I can try to address that situation for you. Please tag me again with your response. I appreciate that, so I can find my way back to this issue.

Thanks,

Kevin,

This problem still exists in v24.6.1 build 2. The Project tab will not open and only gives the error. Simple 3-minute project opened from a CC 2014 file, PP saved as new project. Everything else is working except the Project tab.

Any progress? Would you like me to send you the project file?

Thanks for your help...

Best, RMT

Kevin,

Adobe should make all legacy versions of PPro available so we can do as you suggest.

Hi People,

I've just struggled with trying to open an older (2018) project into a V25 version. Matrix errors and missing Project Panel. My solution is to:

1. Create a new empty project

2. Go to File | Import

3. Select the old project

4. Select Import Entire Project

In my case success! You will/might need to move some imported items around into your preferred folder structure but no errors and the project panel is present.

Still not fixed. Even when I create a new project, there is no project window and I have to import files using the Media Browser. I pay for a professional working system. This is  hurting my productivity. Is there anyway I can roll back this version? I am using Adobe Creative cloud.

Wondering which workspace you're using. I recommend trying another workspace to see if the Project window reappears. I have a customised dual screen workspace with the Project window in its own space rather than a tab group.
