who knows why with the 24.2.1 update you can no longer select points in a mask with the rectangle?

Apologies for this issue. It should now be resolved and can be verified with 24.4 beta.

Moved your post to Bugs as several users have issues with masks.
This issue should now be addressed in 24.3, which was just released.
