Timeline jumps back to playhead anytime I click while playback / I press play or stop

I am not sure if this has always been like that, or if it's a new thing but it's driving me nuts.

For example:

I watch my edit in the timeline and then in some part I zoom in to inspect some detail while it keeps playing. If I now hit pause the timeline automatically jumps to where the playhead has moved to while I was inspecting and away from the section I was looking at.  I would like the timeline to stay on the section I was looking at.

If I click in the timeline in order to relocate the playhead while it's playing, it will always jump to the current playhead's position and not where I clicked.

In order to achieve this I always have to zoom out, so that the playhead is visible, then stop, move the playhead to where I want to be and zoom out.

This has cost me so much time and I am about to lose my mind about it. I really can't remember ever having this problem in 15 years of editing.

I hope I am making myself understand. I have been searching extensively on the internet but I don't even know how to name this problem.

For a moment I thought that "selection follows playhead" was the solution but it really wasn't. I am also under the impression, that sometime for some reason it will work just as I want and remember it, but then it will go back. Maybe I am hitting some secret key without knowing it.

Your help is highly appreciate. If you don't understand please ask,

Thanks

This is not the correct answer, please remove the "Correct Answer" check so people at Adobe actually look at this problem.

I am wondering how to do this.  Adobe no longer makes past versions available, just 2022 & 2023.  I am running Mojave on an old MacPro, and was encountering severe memory leaks on my PP 15.4.5  So I cavalierly uninstalled it and tried to re-install from Creative Cloud.  NOT available.  Talked to Support and he could send me an install of 15.0--none of the "minor" updates.  And we all know how buggy the ".0" versions of Premiere are.  So now I am in worse shape and the memory leak is worse (it runs for about 90 minutes before I have used all 96GB of the RAM plus 90GB of swap memory and the whole computer jams up.  Also, even if I exit Premiere before it has used, say 80GB or Swap memory, the Premiere is still red in  Acivity Monitor, and I have to Force Quit it, before it lets go of the RAM.   BTW, somehow I amde a copy of the 15.4.5 app in the /Applications folder, but cannot just copy it into the "Active" 2021 app--it crashes, must be other Library thingy's that can't use the 15.0. Any help would be appreciated.

Heads up, NEVER uninstall your legacy versions of Premiere!

OH MY GOD! if only this could be a total workaround, but alas, if you're in multicam mode you do not have access to handles for motion keyframing. still this could be used in tandem with unchecking "Show multicam in preview monitor" in a pinch.

This bug has driven me so far up the wall that it has literally changed the way I edit. I mapped a macro for "move playhead to cursor+spacebar" to my capslock key (using karabiner elements to repurpose the capslock key and keyboard maestro for the macro) so that i can at least re-cue my playhead without the timeline jumping.

It makes me sick that it has come to this after over a year of this daily, minute-to-minute nightmare.

HOW ON EARTH IS THIS NOT FIXED YET!? It's making me go insane.

I will never upgrade beyond 2021 until this is taken care of.

For anyone still confused about what the problem is, watch this video:

There's a big discussion thread on this already. But I'm officially reporting this as a bug.

When I'm playing the timeline in Premiere Pro (2022 or 2023), and I zoom into a spot that I want the playhead to stop and then click the timeline, the timeline jumps back to where the playhead was playing. I want the timeline and playhead to stay where I'm clicking! This problem in the later versions (beyond 2021) completely destroys how I edit. And no, I'm not going to use the keyboard shortcut "Move Playhead to Cursor" as a solution. This needs to be addressed ASAP.

I can not believe this isn't fixed for over 2 years of Premiere Pro updates. Watch the video below if what I'm saying is confusing.

https://vimeo.com/1009141643

You will see that v.2021 of Premiere Pro works perfectly in the way that it should, while the latest versions are bugged and ruins a lot of many editors' workflow. We refuse upgrade past v.2021 until this is fix. Please repair this issue!

Versions used in video above:

  • v.2022 - 22.6.4 (Premiere 2022)
  • v.2023 - 23.2 (Premiere 2023)
  • v.2021 - 15.4.5 (Premiere 2021)

Platform used:

Windows 10 (Version 10.0.19045 Build 19045)

Thank you! It's unreal how long it's been without fixture.

I officially posted this in the "Report Bug" section.

It's separate from this discussion thread. Hopefully this cactches the attention of the software developers.

I'm super glad they addressed this problem too!

Other issues I've facing is that it's pretty slow on my computer compared to 2021.

When I right click multiple nested sequences, 2023 literally freezes. I wrote a bug report on it.

Wish I could upgrade but it's not time yet! Maybe in 6 months, haha, after more fixes.

mine is still doing it,

Scenario, I am zoomed in while the video is playing and it goes out of frame while I continue to make adjustments in the "zoomed in area". Then when I press "spacebar", the timeline auto skips to where the play head stopped at. Its super annoying and a time waster when trying to fine tune a small area to have it keep jumping ahead.

Now I know this is the original issues started in this thread, but MINE is 100% still doing it after the update 23.3.0 build 61

I've tried all timeline scrolling options ( no scroll, page scroll, smooth scroll ) they all do the same

Oh wait...
I'm now realizing something. I just bought a new mac. The 16" macbook pro m2 max and had to reinstall everything. Maybe it's something related with some Cache from previous versions or something like that? I hate to be the one suggesting things like "maybe trying FORMATTING YOUR WHOLE MAC" but that could maybe be the anwser? I don't know. Let me know if I can test anything else for you dude.

this video doesn't show much. You seem to stop the timeline with a click of the mouse instead of the space bar? If you leave the timeline playing, zoom in on the timeline once the play bar has gone off of the screen and then hit space bar to pause playback. I'd like to see where the timeline jumps to then

If im correct the update does allow you to click and stop without a jump MASSIVE UPDATE (this is workable for me now).
but the space bar will still make it jump

Oh I understand what's the problem. For the last 6 years that I've used Premiere, I've never had this behavior. When the playbar is off the screen on the timeline, and you press spacebar, it jumps to the playbar. This is the normal behavoir on my experience with Premiere for 6+ years if I remember correctly. The issue that this thread was trying to solve is when "clicking" the time-ruler when the playbar is off-screen. Not with space bar. Sorry man. Try creating another thread maybe so Adobe can look into it? idk.
