Mylenium's answer is absolutely correct - but just in case you struggle with the step "paste image into layer mask" - you do it by Alt clicking the mask then pasting So step by step: 1. Highlight you image layer in the layers panel 2. Ctrl + A to select All then Ctrl - C to copy 3. Alt+LWO  to bring up the New fill layer dialogue 4. Press OK and from the colour picker fill with black Your layers panel should look like this (with the new fill layer highlighted) : 5. Now Alt click on the mask – your image will turn white (and your channels panel will look like this 😞 6. Ctrl V to paste the copied image into that mask 7. Ctrl I to invert it 8. Yes you are correct if artboard is checked - then the crop tool works differently I was puzzled when you showed an image in an artboard being cropped as I did not think that could be done. Sorry I could not read the text in your screenshot,  to try and work out how. What version of Photoshop are you using? In general terms when using artboards the "canvas" is infinite - you can use the crop tool to resize the artboard. In CC you get the properties panel you linked to and can therefore easily edit the corners afterwards. In CS6 you can specify the corner radius in the options bar before you make the shape. The "scale styles" in the image size menu does work but ...  it will only scale to the limit you can set in the layer styles box. So for example if you have an image 1000 x1000px with a polygon that has a 50px stroke size and 50 px drop shadow distance and 50 px drop shadow size If you use image size to scale to 10000 x 10000 px (i.e 10 times bigger) - the drop shadow distance becomes 500 px but the stroke and drop shadow sizes only reach 250 as that is the maximum size allowed in the stroke/drop shadow size entry box. Without seeing the actual foreground and background we can only talk generally, but to make a composite blend nicely look at the following. 1. The colour of the lighting on the subject vs the background. Use a curve adjustment layer to match the warmth or coolness. 2. The direction of the lighting - a background lit from the right and a foreground lit from the left does not look natural. You may need to use a layer mask to introduce new shadows. You can also consider flipping the background. 3. Soft edges (such as hair) usually take some colour from the background. You can brush over such edges with a low opacity brush set to "Color" blending mode 4. The foreground will sit more naturally with a slightly feathered edge. If it is too late and you have already cut out or masked, run round the edge of the cut out (or mask) with the blur tool 5. Hi Simplest is to add a mask. When you paint on a mask with white the layer is visible - with black the layer becomes transparent.
