The selection UI blows. If you select a set of images, deselecting the rest when you click one depends on WHERE you click which is stupid and contrary to every UI rule. A click on one should ALWAYS deselect the rest. With the entire interface being grey, it can be very hard to tell. Add in the different modes (Library vs Develop is the second-stupidest design choice in the program) and its easy to not realize what images I'm actually working on. You can use one or two levels adjustment layers with the black slider moved all the way to the right (253) which will show clearly where you have pure white. Scratch disk is space on your hard drive that Photoshop uses for storage during operation. Running out of hard drive space is VERY VERY bad for a number of reasons. I think you are using the wrong tool for the job. A page-layout or web design program might work a lot better for a mockup. Color in your mockup doesn't matter. And remember, the final images will be either JPEG or PNG files so if you can't get usable color, you already have a problem.
