I see your Paragraph Style is called RH Chapter Title. So I assume there’s a flush left LH Chapter Title on the left master page. When the user opens what file? The InDesign file? A PDF? an ePub? What program is that screen capture from? My guess is that you are talking about an exported PDF. There are many programs people can use to view and read PDFs, and you can’t control that. You can open a PDF in Acrobat and change the default view options, including whether thumbnails are shown. How are the images close cropped? Are the using clipping paths in the paths panel or masked? Are they layered? Have you tried other formats, like TIF? My preferred method of working with close cropped images is to use a flattened image (only the Background layer in the layers panel) and a clipping path created in the Paths panel. Image saved as TIF. Have you tried placing the files from a local directory instead of over a network. I don't suggest this is the way to work with a large number of images, especially when sharing files with other users, but it is a way of troubleshooting. ... View more

Regardless of the number of images, it is poor form to paste images into InDesign. Get the source images and place them. Is this time consuming? Yup. Is this the right way to do it? Also yup. Perhaps pasted images don’t honour the document display preferences. I wouldn’t know and I’m not interested in finding out. You might try changing the preferences for display quality. You can tell InDesign to use high resolution for vectors, rasters, and effects for any or all three display options in InDesign > Preferences > Display Performance. Edit: One more question. Only issue I had was I needed to back save to an earlier version of InDesign. i prepared the files (source and target) in InDesign CC(2017) then discovered my client was using InDesign CS6. I saved Both files as both INDD and IDML. Client opened the IDML target file and got error messages for every instance of the placed INDD. I fixed it by opening the source IDML in CS6 and saving as INDD then opening the target file and relinking to the new INDD. I have had to do this from time to time. I would rasterize the letterhead in Photoshop at 600ppi in RGB mode with antialiasing off. I crop out different areas and save them as separate PNG images. Say there’s a logo and company name at the top and a coloured bar r an address at th bottom. I would save that as two separate images. Import them into the Word file’s header and position exactly. Proof by exporting a PDF and placing in your Indesign file to compare to the original. ... View more

Perhaps you are applying the shadow to the fill and not the object. When I set the shadow to apply to the object it works. In the first example, the shadow is applied to three objects (the three frames). In the second example the effect is applied to one object (the group) . Make sure you use the Selection tool (black arrow) and select the group. The objects have the same stacking order in both examples. But… It seems to want to apply the shadow twice when you use an Object Style. Once to each frame in the group and once to the group. The shadows stack and make the shadow darker than it should be. I need to turn the shadow off for each item in the group by using the Direct Selection tool (white arrow) to click on each frame and clear effects. I have read that this has been a problem for some time.  In my older post I didn’t use a style.
