Just realized I used the totally generic "them" to refer to the brushes and the brush icons. Sorry. The sentence should say "I don't want the brushes to stay with those functions."

My updated photoshop has the brushes palette, and they have the little function icon in the right corner. I don't want them to stay with those functions. I want to have them just as a toolset, where I click on the function I want and then choose the brush I want to use for that function, ie. click on eraser, then click on the brush I want to erase with. Now I have a brush I use all of the time with the eraser icon in the corner, but I cannot use it as blur or brush now. I tried clicking on the Ctrl key when I selected it, but that didn't work. (Using an updated version of photoshop on a pc.) How can I delete those functions that have gotten saved with the brushes? How can I prevent those functions from attaching themselves to my brushes in the future? (I have looked for the answer, but I must not be using the right terminology. I clicked on Restore Default Brushes, but that didn't do anything.) Thanks for your help, GS

They're back! Resetting the prefs fixed the situation, though now I have a completely new interface. Any clue on how to start the new version without the opening screen? I just prefer to have the software ready to go. I tried to do Legacy, but that didn't change anything. Oh, the guides from shapes didn't work for me because the circle isn't really a shape, just a color on a block. The guides went to the outside of the block rather than the circle inside the block. But that is a great new tool I wasn't aware of, so I will definitely find a use for it in the future. Thank you so much for your help!!

Thanks for your reply, Jane. I did update, but it didn't help. I have asked our IT department for help checking on the graphics card. Regarding your method, I need to be able to see where I am placing the guides. For instance, if I have a circle on the canvas, I want to place a guide on the inside and the outside of the border. Not sure how I could do that by entering numbers. My guides are usually used for creating a template so I can copy the same design with different elements several times, keeping the scale consistent across the board. Hope I can figure this out. I really don't want to have to reinstall. But I have to have those guides working, so we'll see what happens. Will try to come back if/when I find an answer. Thanks again! GS

I'm on a pc using photoshop v21.0.2. When I pull a guide from the ruler onto the canvas, it only shows a little weird line and then disappears until I release it, which doesn't really help me place it exactly where I need it since I can't see where it is. Any clue as to why it might be doing this? Thanks, GS

Our documents are, for the most part, in CC17. Now we are moving them all to CC19. However, during this time-consuming process, I still need to be able to open them in the original version until they all have been moved and proofread. It involves opening the CC17 version and then comparing it to the CC19 version, meaning I need to be able to open both versions at the same time. (No matter what Adobe may say, any update can cause movement in our documents, which can cost us thousands if something drops out of a text box, etc. We've already seen a lot of changes happening when we open CC17 docs in CC19, particularly with leading and shifting of lines and boxes.) Anyway, years ago when we did the process to move documents from CS6 to the cloud version, we were able to keep both open at the same time so I could move back and forth as needed. Now when I try to open CC17 when CC19 is open, I get a blue box with a yellow triange and "!" inside. I have to close CC19 to get CC17 open. Since I will be constantly moving back and forth for at least 3 months, can anyone give me a clue as to how to keep them both open at the same time? Changing to PDFs is not an option. I asked the Adobe help team, and they said it was impossible, but another person here is able to do it. We just can't figure out how it works on his computer and not on mine, when our computers are exactly alike. I am using Windows 10, and I did save CC17 when updating to CC19. I have tried opening CC17 first, then CC19, and vice versa. I have tried clicking on the file in the windows explorer window as well as using the file, open, etc., method. All it does is produce that blue warning box and freeze my computer. Thanks for any help you can give me! GS

Good news. When I moved all of my palettes to their usual locations and saved the workspace with a new name, it was saved and returned when I closed and reopened AI. Thanks for your input! GS

Just to be sure I wasn't missing something else, I did click on Reset rather than my named workspace (which does appear in the workspace list but doesn't do anything now), and nothing appeared but random tabs and the odd palettes on the top left hand covering the entire menu bar. Wonder if I need to roll back and then reload this version...

I did have my own workspace set up in CC17, but it didn't move to CC19. When I first opened CC19, it was basically a blank - no toolbars, no palettes, nothing but that random bar floating in the middle. There still isn't the usual all inclusive bar at the top that others have mentioned wanting back.

Okay - found the toolbar when I scrolled to the top of the window dropdown. It was hidden when I first opened it. I scrolled to the bottom, and then when I went back to the top, additional items appeared at the top. Now let's hope I can reopen all of the palettes I use and get them to stick where they belong.

Just upgraded to AI CC19, opened my first document, and even though my workspace supposedly transferred over, I see nothing but a random bar across the middle of the document (managed to move that to the top). I can't find the toolbar (not listed under window). When i click on the character palette, it opens at the top left of the screen rather than the location I had it in in CC17. Something is obviously wrong, but I can't figure out how to fix it. I tried to search the forums but no related questions appeared. Right now, the program is worthless without the toolbar. I am on Windows 10. Thanks for any help. I am sure this must be some little thing I am missing. GS

Thank you! Once the sample text was removed, it reduced the palette to about half what it was. And if I should need that feature, I can always add it back. Nice! Thanks again.

I am on windows 10. If I had a tabloid form on the screen, you can see it would be almost completely covered by the palette. I could move the document, I know, but it would be easier if there is a way to narrow the palette back down.

We just updated to CC19, and the character palette now includes "sample text". Even at the smallest size, this new feature creates a character box that stretches at least a quarter of the way across my screen. While it might be interesting to see how a font would look, I don't really need it unless I am changing a font, which is rare. We use the same fonts in all of our documents, so new ones are not useful. Can I remove that sample text feature or am I stuck with this enormous palette now? Thanks, GS

I am having the same problem with InDesign. It is constantly freezing, and when I check my task manager, there are at least 6 instances of the Adobe CEP HTML Engine listed. I am using Windows 10, InDesign 17 (we cannot update the version due to changes that are made to our documents every time we upgrade), files stored on our local network, and there are no plugins installed. I also use Illustrator (there are 9 of these "engines" listed under AI) and Photoshop (there are 4 of them under PS). I am having to close InDesign via the task manager several times a day because it stops responding. Is there anything I can do to fix this issue?

I tried to start indesign cc, but I get a message saying the FONT USAGE DIALOG.APLN plug in cannot load because it is dependent on the LINKS.RPLN plug in, which failed to load. Please check documentation for the LINKS.RPLN plug in. I have no idea what that is or how to check it. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks!

My company creates forms that are approved by customers and, once approved, they cannot be changed at all. In the past, every 4 years we would buy new InDesign software, open all of our forms, save them in the new InDesign, and hire proofreaders to review every single file. This is an extremely tedious and time-consuming job, but we did find errors (such as kerning changing and moving a word to the next line of a paragraph) or images moving on the page, so we felt we had to do this. Now comes the Cloud software, and it my understanding that I have to update every year, which means when I open a file in my updated InDesign, it says "converted" and requires me to resave it. This means that I must reproof it. Obviously I don't want to have to reproof every form we create every year. Any thoughts on how to prevent a form from converting? Why does it even have to convert if it is still in InDesign? I wouldn't mind updating if it didn't cause changes in my files. The only solution I can think of is to convert all of my forms to pdfs, but that requires proofing both the InDesign and the pdf files, so it is doubling our work. I am having this problem also. The font appears in InDesign but not in Illustrator. And there is no line about synching fonts in the preferences area in the Cloud app. How can I get the font to Illustrator? When I click on the Add Fonts From Typekit button in the character palette in Illustrator, it just takes me to the fontkit website, where it says the font has been synched. There are no updates for the software. I need this font to recreate a logo asap. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

I do appreciate your advice, but I cannot close everything just to work in Illustrator. The other things I have open, like Firefox or Excel, must remain open when I work. It has never happened before, so it must be the 2017 version that is misbehaving. Because it only happens occasionally, I will try closing things when it happens to see if that solves the problem. However, I can't change my entire way of working just because there is a problem with ai. That is what needs to be fixed.

Thanks for the reply, Monika. The problem is that I use 3 of my programs (Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign) at the same time, going back and forth between the three. I do not have any add-ons on Illustrator. So would it help if, when this happens again, I closed the other adobe programs? Or are there others you are referring to? Thanks for your help!

Is anyone else finding, in Ai 2017, that their magnifier tool doesn't work frequently? On Windows 10, I hold the alt key down to zoom out, but I'm finding that instead of the "-" in the magnifier, I'm getting the hand tool, which should happen when I hold the shift key. If I click off of the magnifier and then back on, it will start working again. This seems like a bug, but since Adobe doesn't have a great track record of fixing little things like this, I thought I would check with the forum before reporting it. This happens every few minutes, so it is very inconvenient. Thanks for any input! GS

I am moving from CS6 to the 2017 Cloud versions of Indesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop. In the past, I have been able to move my workspace, keyboard shortcuts, etc., to the newer version by copy/pasting those folders, but I cannot figure this new one out. The folders don't seem to have corresponding folders in the new version. Any idea how to move those preferences from the older version to the newer version? Working in Windows 10... Thanks, GS

You were right - it actually was doing the same thing as the last version (opening the color palette), but I had my palettes stacked a different way in the old version, so I didn't notice it. You saved me a lot of time! Thanks for your answer.

Just moved to ai 2017 and I'm noticing whenever I click on the stroke or fill on the tools palette, it switches to the color palette rather than swatches palette. I closed the color palette and left the swatches palette open (which is what I need), but when I click on stroke or fill, that color palette pops right back open. Is there any way to stop that from happening? I have to use certain colors and don't want to have to click out of the color palette to the swatches palette constantly. Using Windows 10...
