It seems the resolution of the 3 jpegs are different to the background. This is correct and expected behavior in Ps if this is the case. You can confirm the resolution of the background and the three layers you are adding to the layer stack by choosing Image > Image Size and making a note of resolution. Independently of course. To get the jpegs to "fit" in your background image, you can reduce their them by choosing Edit > Transform > Scale and dragging a corner handle whilst holding the Shift key. How big are the files and linked images combined? You say both local and network drives. Try the following. Package the file. Move the file to your local drive on your computer. Check responsiveness. The reason for this suggestion is you may have the ID file saved locally and the links on a shared network drive. If there is a lot of traffic and the files are chunky this will affect speed. Another q, do you have a lot fonts installed and active? Oh I almost forgot, you may want to turn off live preflight when you're not actively using it. Consider using Adjustment Layers. That way you can apply the same effect to multiple images. Right, onto your q. There are many ways. I would use a curves adjustment layer.
