That's the time you want to have already made your paragraph styles. Suppose you want to change your main font, and you already have pages of type styled. If you have paragraph styles applied, just change the font in the style, instead of going through all of the type in all of the pages and changing it over and over. Something else to keep in mind is that you may have PostScript fonts in a document that give you this warning when opening: I got the warning because Rockwell is a PostScript Type1 font, and it's not installed on my system, but the other font is missing not because it's PostScript—only because it's missing. If I hit the Replace Fonts button, I get this: …which tells me when I click on Rockwell that it's a Type 1 font, but when I click on Lobster, I get this: …which tells me that Lobster is an OpenType font (Type 1 flavored), so it would be fine if I can locate it. If you have a backup, I recommend you revert and not convert text to outlines for something like this. If you search the forum for "convert to outline" you will find that there are way more downsides to this, and that while there are some advantages, there's nothing you can do with outlines that you couldn't do with live type in this situation. ... I'd start by exporting to IDML, and export to pdf from the resulting file. If that doesn't work, you could either go through the "divide and conquer" procedure of saving two copies of the file, exporting the first half of the pages from one file and the last half of the other. If one goes but not the other, you know which half of the document has a problem, which might turn out to be a complex vector image or a bad font. Just keep dividing the bad half into halves until you find the page that is the problem and delete the type or the images and you might find something.   Or, you could reinstall the previous version of InDesign. Result? The Illustrator frame completely replaced the Blue Jay? What did you want to happen? Did you want the Illustrator graphic and the blue jay to both be inside the image frame? If so, Bob's suggestion will do that. Select the blue jay image (just the image, not the frame) and cut. The frame will remain. Paste (the blue jay will appear within a new frame). Position the new blue jay with the Illy graphic how you want it. Select both. Group. Cut. Select the original (now empty) blue jay image frame. Edit>Paste Into Any two or more objects will do this, even two copies of the same image, so you can sort of group an image with itself. Hey Barb, when the OP mentioned the bottom and right black lines, I think they mean that the right and bottom edges of the page have a thicker black line than do the top and left edges, which I think are only to meant to imply a small drop shadow that distinguishes the page from the pasteboard. That's the shortcut for Object>Show All on Spread. It's the same on the Mac, except the modifiers are called Command and Option on the Mac. The document you have must have had objects (likely lines) that were hidden by selecting them and going to Object>Hide, and what your coworker told you to do was to unhide them. They print because most objects are set to print by default. If you want them to hide, select them and use Object>Hide or put them on their own layer and hide the layer. If you want them to show so that you can use them as guides but not print, you can put them on their own layer, click on the layer and from the fly-out, select the layer options and untick the Print Layer box. First, I'm not sure how overriding is going to help with applying masters to document pages. That's for editing master objects on document pages independently from the master items on the master pages. There are reasons to do that, but that's a different discussion. What I'd try first is to make a new document with a few pages and two masters and see if you can do what you want there. If you can, it suggests that you could have some document corruption in your problem file. A few standard fixes are to do a save-as (pick a new name or location so you can keep the original). Peter, maybe I'm reading the question differently than you, but that's not working for me. Here's an illustration of what I think the OP is talking about. Here I have four images of different heights aligned to the top, with a guide line snapped to the bottom of the apple. I want all of the images to be the same height as the apple, so I select the cucumbers, hold Shift and Command while I drag the bottom of the image up to snap to the guide, and I get this: …but when I select the last two objects and transform again, either together or separately, they scale to the amount that I scaled the cucumbers, so I get this: If the images are already placed, I don't know of a way to make them all the same height other than the way the OP is doing it, but if you want the images to all be the same height when placing, I use what I think we call "gridify" (select all the images to place at the same time, click once but don't let up the mouse button, drag out an area and hit the up or right arrows to create a grid, and then release the mouse button once you have the number of grid spaces as you need to place all of the images). If the images are of different heights and you want them all to be the same, make sure that the grid blocks are much wider than any item would need to fit the width, and you will end up with image frames that are too wide, but while they are still selected, hit Option Command C and all of the frames will be fit to the images, which will all be the same height. You can then use the align function to gather them to something that's easier to deal with. If you want to fit the widths, use the up arrow, but make sure that the heights are all too big. ... Thanks, that's very helpful. The first pass removed the 8 characters I wanted from the front, but the second pass left 4 of the characters I wanted to delete at the end. I changed the Find to .{16}$ and it got all 12 characters in the second pass. Do you know why that is?   I'm going to play with it for a while and see if I can get it to work in one pass, but if anyone knows how and wants to post it, I'd appreciate it. Just for the heck of it, could you try to add a blank page after page 3 and try duplex printing again? If it goes to the pattern you are already gettig, that last blank page will print by itself, and will be blank on both sides, but if it does work, it would seem that something related to booklet printing is getting confused with just single-sheet duplexing. It's a long shot, but it couldn't hurt to try. And if you're reluctant to waste toner or ink, just hide everything but the page number before you print. ... View more

It sounds like you’re creating a PDF that people will open, and you want them to be able to view it as reader spreads (p1 by itself on the right, then p2 to the left of p3 in the next spread, etc.), rather than as individual pages, is that correct? When you export to PDF, the first tab of the Export window you see is the General tab. There, you can set how the PDF will be seen when opened in Acrobat, but unfortunately, there’s no way for you to know what program the user will select to view the PDF on their system. If someone on a Mac uses Preview to open the PDF, it won’t honor those settings. And since you call it a “booklet,” do you want the user to print the PDF to a booklet? Acrobat can impose the pages into printer’s spreads, but the user needs to know how to do that (but probably doesn’t know how), and doing the imposition yourself won’t guarantee it will work for everyone (or maybe not anyone), so I don’t recommend you do that. ... I think this is a Photoshop issue, because when you select "Edit With Photoshop," it opens the image in Photoshop. I'm not sure what Photoshop chooses as the location to save has to do with InDesign. A direct save from Photoshop should save in the same location (overwriting the old file), and you would expect a Save-As to default to the last location a Save-As was saving to (which is what ever location you picked last). Are you sure the format is .jpg? If you had changed something about the image that isn't within the jpg spec (like not being flattened) would give you a different file. In the Object menu are Frame Fitting Options. If these were set while no object is selected, they become the default for new objects. You could try removing the PDF from the image frame, choosing Object>Fitting>Clear Frame Fitting Options and then importing the PDF again. Then, if it's still not what you want, experiment with the Fill Frame and Fit Frame choices in that same menu. And you can use the same width and height or percentage settings in the Control window that's usually at the top of the screen that allow you to set the geometry of a frame, but if you select the image within the frame either by double-clicking on the image or (if you have it active in View>Extras>Content Grabber) clicking the little donut in the middle of a selected image frame, you will change the content, rather than the frame. ... If you want a full page of images that flows with the text, here's a solution that has a few steps, but it isn't all that hard.   I'm starting with some placeholder text flowing through several pages of a document, the way you describe. The place I would like the text to break has been colored red for demonstration purposes. The black text will be before the images, and the red will be after. Also, I've turned on the hidden characters at the bottom of the Type menu. Since some of the red paragraph that will come after the images is at the bottom of the page, I'm going to replace the paragraph return (shown here circled in green): …with a column break character, and since my text frame is a single column, it acts as a frame break character, sending all of the text after the break to the next frame. It's hidden character looks like this: …and now I have this: Now I want page 4 to be where the images go, so I'm going to make an image frame on the pasteboard, and I'll color it yellow for demonstration purposes: I'm going to select the frame and copy it to the clipboard, switch to the type tool, place the cursor before the first word and paste, making an inline graphic: Next, I'm going to switch back to the select tool, select the yellow frame and drag the right side until it's the width of the text frame that it's anchored within: You will notice that when the frame is selected, you can see the anchor symbol, which tells us that it's an anchored frame. Next, I'll grab the lower center anchor and drag down so that the yellow frame fills the text frame: Now that the frame is in place, any text added to the text before the anchored frame that expands into page 4 will force the frame to page 5, since there won't be any room for the frame and anything else. If you want an image in the yellow frame, just select it and place, but if you want multiple images, you will have to place them on the pasteboard, arrange them, group them, then copy to the clipboard. Next, you select the yellow frame and go to Edit>Paste Into, and it will paste the group into the yellow frame. The group can be moved or resized within the frame like a single image, and if you want to select one element of the group independent of the others, double-click on it. Here is a group of apple images pasted into the frame: Now, I'll select the yellow frame and take the yellow fill off and add some text to page 3 to force the anchored frame to page 5: …and all of the red text moved to page 6, which is what I think you want.
