One is Swatches that looks like a bunch of squares, and the other is the Color Mixer, and it looks like an painter's pallet. I'm not sure when I'd want to do that either… By @Jeremy AB We do that all the time where I work. We do grocery ads that sometimes have blocks that we do with an image frame with a stroke. You can group several items, cut or copy them and paste into the frame with the stroke. Now you have the advantage of all of the fitting commands to the group that can speed up placement you wouldn't get if you just placed the images within the bounds of the stroke, but not directly in the frame. You can also apply an effect to an outer frame and paste into it a frame that has cropping that you couldn't do with a single frame. It really depends on what you want or need to do, but there are plenty of things I wouldn't imagine doing because the need never presented itself. ... View more

What if you make two new portrait pages, cut the contents of the landscape pages, paste them into the portrait pages and rotate them, then delete the landscape pages. As to the color, if you turn off the black, only 2, 6 & 7 have no color other than black. Is that what you had intended? Can you check the alignment of the page numbers on the master page. The correct thing to do if you want page numbers on the outside is to set the alignment to Away From Spine. This presumes that you have a real facing-page document, and not one that was sort-of faked the way Peter has described. What could have happened is that the left master page had it's page number set to left align, and the right was set to right align. If document pages switched position, their alignment would now be as if you had set the alignment to Toward Spine. You may be able to fix this by setting the alignment on the master page text frames that hold the page numbers on the master page. If you have overridden those frames on document pages, re-applying the master page could work, depending on how many other local overrides you have made. ... View more

It may be document corruption. I'd try making a test file from scratch and see if the problem replicates there. Just a few master-page items and a few document pages. Since it's a book, I'd make 3 or 4 copies of the doc and put them into a new book. If everything works, it's probably some buggy stuff in your working documents. If that's the case, a trip through .idml might help. If you can replicate the problem in fresh documents, there may be a bug in the program, or maybe just bad preferences. The text frame is empty on the master page, but it's still on the master page, which is why you see the dotted frame edge. If you want to keep text frames on the master page, it could be assumed that you want text in them, yes? The way it's done in InDesign is that you release the frame from the master page to the document page, and it becomes like a text frame that was created on the document page (i.e., it won't show the dotted frame edges). To release a text frame from the master page to the document page, you can select the page in the Pages pallet, go to the fly-out and select Override All Master Page Items, which you probably don't want to do for several reasons. A better way is to hold Shift and Command (Mac OS, or Shift and Control if you're on Windows) and click on the master-page item on the document page. That will release just what you click on. The third way is if you want to create new document pages dynamically as you place text from a text file. This is how people who use master-page text frames do it. If you have lots of text from MS Word or some text file that you want to import into InDesign, but you want it all in (for example) a 3x5" frame on right pages or a 4x6" frame on all left pages, or something other than full-page text frames that anchor to all four margin guides, you would go to File>Place, navigate to your text file, and once the cursor is "loaded" with type, you click into the un-released text frame on the document page. This will override the frame to the document page, and all text that doesn't fit will be overset (the little red indicator will show). If you want to have InDesign create new pages until all of the overset text is used up, hold the Shift key before clicking into the un-released frame on the document page. The reason people use master-page text frames is so that they can change the geometry, position, fill color, stroke, or many other aspects of the master frame on the master page, and all of the frames on the document pages will respond in kind. Any alterations you make to a released frame on the document page, other than populating it with text, will lose that aspect. So, if you move a relesed frame on document page 3, moving the frame on the master page will move all of them except the one on page 3. You can still change the fill color on the master page, and the one you moved will change color, but that's because you didn't change the color on the document page, so it's color is still connected to the master. I'm not clear what you have, and what you want. …but I cannot seem to swap two spreads (4 pages). Do you want to swap two spreads? If so, you can do that with the Pages pallet. In this screen shot: …I want to move the yellow pages after the magenta pages. I click the left page (p4), shift-click on the right page (p5), then drag them to the right of the magenta pages (6&7). When I see the vertical line, I release, and I get this: …where the yellow pages have been moved after the magenta pages. If that's what you want, but you're getting a 4-page spread instead of two consecutive two-page spreads, you probably have Allow Document Pages to Shuffle unchecked in the fly-out of the Pages pallet. You can leave it unchecked if you want or need, but you can still have two consecutive two page spreads if you're careful where you release when moving. When Allow is unchecked, you will see a bold bracket, followed by a vertical line with an arrow pointing in the direction the pages will be added to your spread. In my example, I'm moving the yellow pages after the magenta, so I'm dropping them to the right of the magenta spread, and with Allow unchecked, I see the arrow pointing to the right. If I dropped pages to the left, the arrow would point left. That's how you combine pages into a spread of more than two (in a facing-pages document, or more than one in a non-facing document, but only when Allow is unchecked). If that's what your getting, but you want two consecutive two-page spreads, either recheck Allow, or move the cursor a little more to the right, and it will change from brackets/line/arrow to just the vertical line you would see if Allow was checked. If I try to highlight and drag, then unite into one 4-page spread… Do you mean that's what you want to do, or what you are getting that you don't want? if I use the Move Pages (right click) it says "Spread cannot have more than 10 pages." I do something very similar to what Jane does, but I just want to add that when I've done this in the past, I've had to nudge my text fields a little to the left, right, up or down a few times to compensate for how the printer pulls the paper through. Since I use a single text frame for each label (chained together), rather than Jane's table, I select all, add a small stroke and print to plain paper like Jane. If it's too high, I nudge it down and print again, and then make adjustments until the strokes align with the sheet of labels. Once they do, I remove the stroke and save as a template. This template is customized for my printer, so I wouldn't try a whole stack of labels on another printer without first seeing if the alignment works, or if I have to do some more nudging. ... Does the frame you're trying to put the image into already have an image in it? If you go to View>Extras>Show Frame Edges, you should see diagonal lines in an image frame if it's empty. If there is something in the frame, even if the content is moved outside of the bounds of the image frame, it will not show the diagonal lines. If your frame edges aren't showing, an empty frame and one with content pushed outside of the box will look the same. If you do have content in the image frame, holding Option (Mac OS) or Alt (Windows) while clicking the loaded cursor into the frame will replace the content of the image frame with what ever is in the place cursor. ...
