FrameMaker

Is there a way to place multiple tables side by side? I mean I need to place 10 or more 2 by 2 tables side by side WITHOUT placing them in individual textboxes. I know that you can place up to 4 tables by using split tool but I need to place more than 4.Thanks in advance.

In my Indexes, I have found that the page automatically justifies the index text entries. Is there a setting or method where justification is not automatic, so that I can get more text on the pages? Thanks in advance.

Hi,   Can someone test, if this is not an artefact on my PC. Enter some text, e.g.: 123 456 789 Then enable Track Text Edits and delete the middle paragraph 456 and click Preview Final on the Track Text Edits toolbar. Then copy the whole content and paste it into your favourite text editor. Here all three paragraphs are pasted, although FrameMaker does not show this text. I assume that's the same with hidden conditional text. I wanted to do a major comparison via text, regular expressions and Excel, and did not notice that there is content which should not be there.   I do not know, what could be done (besides to accept all changes before copy).   Best regards   Winfried

I maintain some user manuals in FM 2019; the deliverables have hitherto been only PDF. I’d like to provide responsive HTML5 output as an alternative. I’ve had reasonable success in my initial general conversion experiments with Publish to Responsive HTML5 but I can’t find any information anywhere about how (or even whether) one can ensure that conditional text in the FM source carries its conditional tag colour (and/or tag background colour) into the HTML output.For example, if I have a Draft tag coloured green, I would like text tagged as Draft to show in green in the HTML. At present, the Draft-tagged text is included in the HTML output but with the standard colour of the applied FM paragraph style. Thus in the HTML5 the Draft-tagged text is indistinguishable from the rest of the text. Is there any setting that I can use to carry the conditional colour through to HTML5?

Hello!I've updated styles in two different books and would now like to compare the styles from a file in each book to see how the styles differ between the two books.  Is there a way to do this or do I need to compare style-by-style? thanks,Elo

Hello all! Is there a way to specify a .properties file to use when processing DITA content with the DITA-OT? A .properties file can contain information about how to process the DITA data, such as including custom CSS files, headers and footers. I thought it might be this last text box in the DITA-OT Customize dialog. (Sorry I'm working in a Japanese environment, but the last text box is "Additional parameters".I tried entering "--propertyfile=es.properties" which is what I use on the command line with the standard 'dita' command. However, nothing is output.I tried "es.properties", but then I get a build error:BUILD FAILED Target "es.properties" does not exist in the project "DOST". Since I can't see what command FrameMaker is using, it's near impossible to diagnose the problem. (I can see a flicker of a command prompt, but it disappears before I can see what it's doing...) And the documentation is no help either ("You can specify additional parameters"... THANKS!) 

I am trying to find a list of internal FrameMaker menu names for a script I am writing. Are they in a config file somewhere? Thanks.

Has anybody else noticed this? I just found it. If you select either Fit Window to Page or Fit Window to Frame, the file undocks from the interface and is in its own window.   I've reported it as a bug, and now I'm second guessing myself.

When I create an Index (term) entry for multiple locations in the manual (for page numbers and subsequent text entries), I noticed that the numberical index lists in order. However, the text index entry is listed in alpabetic order. In this case, the page number listed for the first numerical page entry does not match the the same order of the text entry listed, since the text entry is listed alphabetically. The first numerical page entry is: Direct Mail;<$nopage>Direct Mail:See The Express Sales Call SystemThe second numeric page entry is: Direct Mail;<$nopage>Direct Mail:See Marketing > Direct Marketing Note the text in the image is backwards from the page number listing above.

FrameMaker 2020 version 16.04.1062I'm sure this an easy one for the experts. The cell numbering in the attached table goes from 1,2,3,4,7,8.....The CellNumbered Format in Paragraph Designer (see attached) is the same when I select any of the cells with cells with cell numbering. What am I doing wrong? Thanks.

Has this been added to FM? I see some old posts that it isn't possible to do this (and experimentation with using either \n and \r seems to bear this out), but it would be really useful if I could figure out a way to do this. Mostly so that when I generate a PDF, the bookmarks include the section numbering automatically as part of the heading instead of having to add them in after the fact.

All files got their master pages by individually using Format > Page Layout > Apply Master Pages accordint to the table of the reference page which was also imported to all files from the template. The book was newly set up after all files (including the generated ones) got their master pages assigned. All files are in an own document window by Window > Tile. Neverthelesse with Edit > Update Book (Apply Master Pages) or with selecting the book with all files and then using  Format > Page Layout > Apply Master Pages I get this error message within the first three of 11 files:No master pages applied because one or more master pages do not exist.→ Which ???? I'm trying to use the DITA-OT with FrameMaker to produce output.Oracle has recently changed its licensing terms for Java 8, and I would prefer to not use an Oracle-based JRE. I have a 3rd party runtime installed, and DITA-OT runs just fine with it. However, FrameMaker does not see the runtime and tells me the JRE is required. I installed the Oracle JRE, and FrameMaker works just fineInterestingly, FrameMaker uses my 3rd party runtime to actually run DITA-OT; this runtime is what my JAVA_HOME variable points to. So, what does FrameMaker look for to determine whether the Java runtime is installed? Since FrameMaker will _use_ my 3rd party runtime, I want it to recognize it. Best,MT

How can I change the order of Reference Pages? I want to add pages between existing ref pages to keep related information together.

Since there are a number of ways to produce PDF from FrameMaker, and even more options when using DITA, I recorded this short (4.5 minute) video for my online course, Authoring Structured Content in FrameMaker, that describes the options. I'm trying to insert the "otherprops" DITA attribute into the footer of my FrameMaker template master first page. It seems like the format for the variable should be <$attribute[otherprops]>, but that isn't working.  What am I missing? I'm not seeing an example of a DITA attribute format in any discussion or example that I can find.

Yesterday one of my product managers told me that their product is in the final stages of being certified for sale in the EU, and asked me if we have a translation firm we work with since some EU countries require native language documents. Target is about 6 months from now.   As far as I know, my company has never had anything translated.   So far I only have one document that would be needed for this product, but it's in unstructured FrameMaker and makes fairly extensive use of variables. I think there's only one condition in use, though, for commenting/questions.   All graphics use callouts with a separate, FM table as a legend. I've also been working on consistency in information presentation and words by applying the principles of simplified technical English as far as I can and also using AutoText to insert standard language for procedures and descriptions. Hi, I am attempting to use an SGML DTD in FrameMaker. When I open the DTD, I specify SGML, but I get "Length of name, number, or token exceeded the NAMELEN limit" errors and my element/attribute names are initial caps. I think I need an SGML application set up ahead of time, but I don't know the syntax for avoiding the NAMELEN errors and preventing element/attribute capitalizations changes. Any help or pointers would be appreciated.

Frame is now adding the first line of text in a file to the left-hand HTML navigation, even if that line of text doesn't appear in the TOC and even if the paragraph tag is excluded from the HTML content. Previously, if you excluded the TOC file from the output and generated the HTML, it would use the file names of the individual files in the book. Now, if you exclude the TOC, it uses the first line of text.  For example, if you have a volume title as the first bit of text in a chapter, a chapter title as the second line, and you generate a TOC with the chapter title but the volume title not included, itstill  adds the volume title into the left hand nav bar above the chapter title when you generate the HTML. 

Hi,   I was asked to create a PDF/X-4 compliant PDF. The corresponding joboptions file is in my Roarming folder: c:\Users\myusername\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\FrameMaker\16\Additional_PDF_Settings\PDFX4.joboptions This video says that I should I copy it to the Adobe PDF Roarming folder: https://video.tv.adobe.com/v/32429t1 c:\Users\myusername\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe PDF\Settings\PDFX4.joboptions OK. I did this. In FrameMaker I can now select this joboptions file to create a PDF or to print to a PostScript file. However, Distiller does not find this joboptions file. What do I have to do? I restarted everything, but PDF/X4 is not listed. I need to print to a PostScript file and then distill, as I should also print to a larger paper size with registration marks.   In the Acrobat forum there is e.g. this post. As far as I can tell, FrameMaker assigns the text and formatting for note types from the EDD, i.e., when you set the type attribute of a note to "danger", you get DANGER: as the prefix. To translate the prefixes to a different language, do I need to edit the EDD? 

Hi,   Another PDF/X issue. Currently Distiller has only the PDF/X-3:2002 joboptions. When I create a PostScript file (copyright page with only a single paragraph) and distill this file with these joboptions, I get this error message: [Violation] Annotations were found inside the BleedBox, TrimBox, or ArtBox on the following pages ...   When I create the PostScript file, I have selected the Adobe PDF printer and Generate Acrobat Data, so that I can select the PDF/X-3 joboptions. When I deselect Generate Acrobat Data, Distiller creates the PDF without error message. However, then FrameMaker ignores the PDF/X-3 joboptions.   Best regards, Winfried

Hi All, I am helping a client produce AMM and IPC documentation for a particular aircraft. They have purchased the DTDs etc., but I am a little fuzzy on setting up a FrameMaker structured application based on these DTDs. I can open the DTD with FrameMaker as SGML and get an EDD, but I do get some parser errors. I need to ask my client more questions, like what are their deliverables, etc.    I need some help getting started and have budget for this. Is there other information that I need to get from my client? Thank in advance.
