I am new to scripting and have no idea what I am doing... I seek help with developing a script to do the following (if it is possible): Activate a particular layer. (e.g. "Black")Deactivate a particular layer. (e.g. "CMYK")Find/replace all instances of a swatch used as a fill in tables (e.g. Find "Yellow" change to "Grey")Export book to PDF (so the dialogue box is shown and I can choose the appropriate options). Some background on the project...I have an ID book that contains 40 chapters. Each chapter is one INDD file. Each chapter has a layer named "CMYK" and another "Black". The respective layers contain different versions of artwork as well as background designs that are used in the colour version and the black and white version of the PDF.. Rather than manually activating and deactivating layers on 40 different INDD files, and then running a find/replace colour operation, I would like to be able to streamline the process and run a script where all the changes are mad

Hi, I have spent two days trying to set up a cover and spine for Amazon KDP and have to admit defeat, so I’m hoping you can help. I have watched 10 videos, read all the online content I can find and am working to Amazon KDP’s cover calculator. My book is 152.4 x 228.6 mm (6 x 9 inch) with 150 pages. I created a new print document with three pages. Document setup (screenshot at end of this message): facing pages unticked, margins: 3.17 and bleed 3.17 (top, bottom, left and right). Then I selected all three pages in the pages panel and unticked allow document pages to shuffle, and unticked allow selected spread to shuffle.   Under liquid page rule, I selected scale, then used the page selection tool to select the spine. I then went to Layout/Margins and Columns and set all to 0. Then I went to the control panel and changed the width of the spine to 8.58mm (as per KDP calculator for my books size and page number). This created a space between the spine and the front cover (

I need to put a closed quotation mark at the beginning of a sentence to indicate something special. I believe there is a way to do this, but can't find it. ‘bhūvann āṅgubhartarāḥ The opening mark has to be closed, not open.

The attached screenshot shows the problem. The pink box is 4.25 inches by 6.25 inches, the blue-green box is 4 inches by 6 inches -- which is what I want for a 4 x 6 card. BUT when I export the file to a High Quality Print PDF, the bleed area outside the cut marks is gone -- so there is no bleed area. The office printing the card won't accept that.  I have an M3 MacBook Pro with Sequoia 15.5.  What do I do???

Graphic designer creates indd files for catalog - then I take them and turn them to pdfs for online -  never had a problem in the past with CS6.Now we have CC - so I am in Essentials mode (as usual), but when I open a section of pages, the numbering is different than gr. designer has numbered.  So her pages numbered 8 -12 in the Pages panel is numbered 1-5 on my computer - which makes it confusing to say the least.I am IN "Start page numbering at ...  " and it will say 8 or 12 or whatever it should be - but in the pages panel to the right, it has the pages as 1, 2, 3 etc.I've looked everywhere and can't see why this is happening - anyone know?

I'm reading Peter Kahrel's "GREP in InDesign 3rd Edition" and have a question about Unicode character input behavior. According to the book (page 7), when you enter <014B> in the Find What field, it should convert to the actual character, but if your screen font doesn't support it, it displays as an empty square □. However, when I test this with codes like <20000> or <2F800> on Windows, they remain as code format (e.g., <020000>) rather than converting to characters or showing empty squares. Has anyone experienced the "empty square" situation described in the book? I'm wondering if this behavior has changed in recent InDesign versions, or if I'm missing something. Any insights would be appreciated! Thanks.

Each of my chapters now begins with page 1. I have incorporated them in a book (indb). I want the book's page numbering to run sequentially, from 1 to 1,200 (Yes, that's right. Just be glad you're not the student who has to read all that.)  I do know how to do page numbering with sections in an individual file, but I don't know how to arrange it among files that I have incorporated in a book. For example, Chapter 1 runs from 1 to 109, with a verso page as 110 even though it will be blank. Chapter 2 should therefore begin with 111 (recto page). I can accomplish that "by hand," as it were, by specifying for each chapter the page number on which it is to begin, but is there a way to do that automatically? I ask because if I make changes in a chapter that either add or remove pages, I'd like not to have to hand-renumber the succeeding chapters.

I have a JavaScript script that opens a Letter size document containing one page, adds some text frames to the page, and then resizes them to fit their contents. Then I want to resize the page (or the document) down to the overall size of the text frames (approx. 5" wide and 3" high). I can accomplish what I want in InDesign by selecting the Page Tool, setting Liquid Page Rule to Off, and entering the width and height values. I cannot figure out how to do it in JavaScript. Help! Thanks!

First of all, thanks to all who replied to my initial post about whether I should make each question a separate thread. I have created a book and have imported to it the separate files for the front matter, preface, chapters, appendices, and index, in that order. The first thing I don't understand is whether those indd files now have two existences in some sense--one as separate files and one as related files in the book. For example, if I open Chapter 1 as a separate indd document and make some changes, will those changes be reflected in the book's Chapter 1 or do I have do delete and re-import it? Conversely, if I make changes in the book's Chapter 1, will the separate Chapter 1 file reflect them? Or is there only one copy of Chapter 1, and I can open it either separately or from the book? (I hope this makes some sense, but I wouldn't guarantee that.) 

Suddenly I realized that using auto line spacing works well when inserting formulas in a line.But sometimes I want the auto line spacing value to be the line spacing I want.It has a calculated relationship with the line spacing, can I change it? It would be great if I could change it.

You can only right-click on it, and you can't change the lookup box in the ID.It's a pity that the font can't be enlarged.Thank you very much.

why do most of my ID docs show as converted and images no longer appear

My parent pages are a two-page spread. I have one page, to which the appropriate parent page has been applied. When I insert a page break on that first page, InDesign inexplicably creates a three-page horizontal spread.

This is a little complicated and I don't know what the client did exactly, but they gave me a word document with endnotes only, from several different chapters. I am assuming they cut the various chapter endnotes text (only) and pasted them into a new word doc. Thus the endnotes have been separated from the document text with note indicators. When I take this word file and import into indesign, the "import endnotes as static" option does not work. The note numbers cannot be selected, the space between the note number and note text cannot be selected. If I delete a carriage return between two notes, the note number after the carriage return will disappear. I am guessing there is nothing that can be done, but wanted to check before I manually renumber a thousand notes. BTW, the notes that were cut and paste, were edited after cutting them out. So, I can't reimport the original chapter files to get the endnotes as static, because they don't have the edits. 

Sorry to bother, but I'm still struggling with GREP! I need an expression that superscripts the numbers at the start of a string of references - for example: 1Princess Margaret Hospital, Toronto, ON, Canada; 2University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, MB, Canada; 3London School of Economics, London, UK; 4Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre Madrid, Spain. The references need to remain a single line,  each reference separated by a semicolon, and the digits can typically include up to 2 characters. As in my example, the names can include digits at times, so those would have to be excluded from superscripting. Help! 

I have several questions about assembling a multi-chapter book in InDesign. The book exceeds 100Mb, so I don't think it makes sense to try to do it as a single indd file. Because my questions deal with different aspects of the process, my sense is that I should make them separate threads rather than bundle them into a single query. Does that make sense?

Please, please, PLEASE!!!! For the love of God!I've been using inDesign for like 20 YEARS now, that's probably months waiting to be able to rename layers. Just let us be able to rename layers by selecting the layer in the layers panel and pressing return or enter like in After Effects, Premiere and so many other programs. maybe even a shortcut key? You have users writing scripts to bypass the existing behavior because it is no good. Click-pause-click and then wait a couple second and THEN we're able to finally change the name of the layer? That's click, wait, click, wait again just to rename a layer.  Come on team! Please just do us this little solid. There are no other key bindings or functions for selecting a layer in the layers panel and pressing return. There is no drawback to this. It will only save us time, which is a core tennant of Adobe's mission. Thank you!

Windows 10 / Core i7-3.5 per core / 32 gig ram / IND 18.1When I start my INDD I'm getting a weird error message after the program has started. It prevents file opening until I click "cancel.""joe-common.indl" could not be found. Do you want to postpone itss recovery?Click Yes to recover this document laterClick no to delete recovery data for this documentClick cancel to postpone all documentI did the Adobe panacea of deleting preferences but that did not work. Other than this error message, IND is performing normally. Do I need to uninstall and reinstall, or is there another way of correcting this? Thanks to those who know more than me,Joe

I need to be able to make just the first number within the parentheses bold, but not any others. In this sample, I have the solution:(1) Surname Initial et al. Journal 2000;10:2XX–2XX; (2) Surname Initial et al. Journal 2000;10:2XX–2XX;(3) Surname Initial et al. Journal 2000;10:2XX–2XX; (4) Surname Initial et al. Journal 2000;10:2XX–2XX;(5) Surname Initial et al. Journal 2000;10:2XX–2XX; (6) Surname Initial et al. Journal 2000;10:2XX–2XX;(7) Surname Initial et al. Journal 2000;10:2XX–2XX. (?<=\()\d+.*?(?=\)) works well, but there are times when there is another number buried within each reference that can be in brackets, like this:(1) Surname Initial et al. Journal 2000;10(23):2XX–2XX; (2) Surname Initial et al. Journal 2000;10(23):2XX–2XX;What do I need to add to my GREP to only choose the first parenthethical number? I thought a second GREP

So I'm attempting to use the Share for Review feature in InDesign with my team; It just feels like the notifications are almost overkill. Not only do I see them in my Creative Cloud app, and also in the document itself, but I also get emails whenever anyone does ANYTHING on the document -- like SO MANY EMAILS. Can I turn off the email notification part? 

Unfortunately the update to 20.2 lets InDesign crash whenever I close a document. Luckily CC lets you revert to an earlier version quite easily.     <Title renamed by MOD>

Hello, I am having huge issue with Indesign - I am working on a 200 pages document I saved indd and then exported PDF - all was good. Then I worked for a bit again and my Indesign crashes. When its recovered several text on random double pages were deleted!! How is this possible? Text is missing, there are only blank pages... Did anyone experienced anything similar?  What really suprised me was that pages were there, but all contened on these pages was missing. Of course i didnt realise it at first and I resaved my previous version...   Windows 10 ProIndesign v 18.1 Damage is so vast I have to start the project from the scratch. Really didnt see anything like this before in InDesign. Thank you for any helpMartina
