#InDesign #typography Some times type pops out of the text frame, what is this called? Is there a way to detect or automatically fix it. Does it matter? I have looked at the app.selection[0].lines[0].endHorizontalOffset, which seems to be clipped to the text frame. It was suggested that I look at the optical settings, but these did not change the appearance. If I export the frame the type is clipped. Is this a bug? *I have a motive this question, I have a plugin that can detect this effect. But, I would prefer a script.
I use InDesign for lots of different things, but the main thing I use it for now is being the author/editor/typsetter/graphic designer of an ~900 page textbook. It has been very painful, and required lots of advice from the experts in this forum, but I have finally got it working. While the process for naming, backup and versioning that I have adopted is specific to this unusual use case, there might be elements of it that others think worth adopting, which is why I'm posting it; your mileage may vary. I will be very interested to see the replies and the good suggestions in them for different use cases. Naming: See the above screenshot. My filenames consist of several parts. They are designed to make my life easier when I'm looking at a Windows File Explorer or equivalent file display. (I use Directory Opus instead of Windows File Explorer, it's a lovely replacement for File Explorer. The screenshot above is Directory Opus.) The parts are:Textbook Name: the textbook's title is App
I'm using WIN 11 and have just downloaded InDesign to format a book.My cursor, which works everywhere else, does NOT appear while editing, etc.If I press the CTRL button, it does indicate where the curser is located, but it is basically unusable since I can't see it to choose items.I can drop it down to the bottom tool bar and see it, but when I moving it back into the program (not just the workspace) it disappears.I am not aware of setting any particular preferences (at least yet).I could use a little help here. What is the devil? After moving the vertical text box multiple times, the text box text overflowsThe version is 19.5Sometimes it happens that left-aligned becomes right-aligned.Because I'm using the grid?
Hi everyone,Does anyone know how to prevent InDesign from splitting names that are separated by commas at the end of a line? I’ve tried a few GREP expressions, but they haven’t been entirely effective. Any suggestions?
I have picture captions which I want to format with a full stop in a paragraph style (I would prefer it to just be in the style, not actually typing it, as it is not to be used in e.g. the ToC).Can this be done? In the GREP maybe (in that case how)?
Hi all -- I have an indesign document published online because it has gifs in it. However when viewing the published link, the toolbar at the bottom of the browser window shows the page count as you change slides. Is there a way to hide the page count from that toolbar? When I am sharing the document through a zoom meeting I don't want people to know how many pages the document is total. Alternatively, is there another way to save my document so I can present it with gifs but not published online? Thanks! <Title renamed by moderator>
which size is exactly same as demy size? a3??
I'm am working on a book cover and it's turned into a nightmare. Short story long, my former book distributer provided book cover templates created in Adobe InDesign which included crop marks and bleeds on the template. That way I knew EXACTLY where to place my title, images, and so forth because I could see where the cut off lines were. Now I work with a different distributer, and, unfortunately, their book cover template is not compatible with Adobe InDesign. So, I took the measurements from the template to create an InDesign document. The spine width is perfect, and I'm able to add the bleeds with InDesign, but NOT the crop marks. Just got my proof copy from Amazon. The title, at the top of the page, is nearly cut off. Yikes! Not having the crop marks visible on my document is a serious problem. It's my visual cue for knowing exactly where the top of my page will be will be cut off. Yeah, I get it that I can add the crop marks when I export my file. However, I need to see the printe
Is there a way to make my chapter numbers automatic when I apply the master page? For the chapter start page I have a separate master page and my Chapter number text box also inside that master page. Tried everything. But its not working. Someone please help.
Somehow, changes have occurred in the latest versions as to how text wrap affects objects on separate layers. I used to be able to create a photo collage on a bottom layer, and then create a top layer with text wrapping around graphics only on that layer. Now it seems that text wraps around everything from top to bottom. I understand that I can "ignore text wrap" for specific text objects, but that doesn't solve my problem. I appreciate any suggestions. Thanks. <Title renamed by MOD>
I have a simple proof-of-concept document attached in which adding a footnote to the first line adds extra space below the second line if the third line is set to split columns. Weird, huh? Will someone take a look and tell me if this is really a bug, or if I'm hallucinating? Thanks in advance! <Title renamed by moderator>
I want to apply a GREP style to all occurences of "Times" where it occurs after "the" (or "The") and begins with a capital letter. As I am still new to GREP and learning (and have not come very far in this yet 😊) I would appreciate your help in formulating this.
In my linked word document I have a number of styles which also exist with the identical names in InDesign. When placing the text (and thus creating the link) I select as follows: My problem is that if I have placd the Paragraph Styles in groups, the styles are recreated as doubles when I update the word document. Does this mean it is not possible to group text styles if I want them to work with a linked word document?
I bought a HP Printer which works fine with many applications, but with InDesign, it prints just blank pages, not the document
I just got a Macbook Pro M1 Pro (16GB Memory) and I keep getting "Your system has run out of application memory" whilst using Adobe software. After about an hour of using InDesign and Illustrator simultaniously I get this pop-up and am forced to quit one of the programs to free up memory space. On activity monitor it shows InDesign using 70GB+ of memory with only 2 or 3 documents open after only a couple hours. I also noticed that when importing an image into an InDesign document, the application memory goes up a considerable amount. For example, importing a single 1MB image increased my InDesign application memory by 2GB. I previously had a 16GB Intel Macbook Pro and never had this issue.
Hi everyone,Since updating InDesign to the latest version, I've noticed that a very important feature to me has stopped working.Previously, when I randomly moved an object, I could easily check the exact vertical and horizontal distances (in cm, inches, pt, pixels etc) it has moved by going to Object > Transform > Move. The window would display the vertical and horizontal coordinates of the last movement. However, now these fields are blank and no longer show the information.Does anyone know how to resolve this issue?Thank you!
Hi Community,I can't open Indesign and Illustrator since this morning. They both worked fine yesterday.I myself did some trouble shooting and can't seem to work. Hi y'all!I am experiencing a strange "bug."I want the right running header (based on the chapter title paragraph style) to be in small caps, but it only works for the first six letters, and the rest are normal!I tried setting the text variable in the master page as small caps, but nothing changed. Here is a screenshot. Any ideas for a fix or workaround? Thank you!
Please note - I have lots of experience with PhotoShop but am very new to InDesign. I have some pages that were created for me by a graphic designer and all I want to do is edit one single word in the document. I can select the text using the type tool, but when I start typing the new word it loses all formatting. The other thing that I notice that is odd is that I can get a type cursor to start before the word or after the word, yet it will not allow me to place a type cursor within the word itself. Is there something I am missing that is preventing me from simply updating the existing text and retaining the same formatting? I have read all the help articles on editing text in InDesign and still cannot figure this out. Any help is greatly appreciated.
I have an issue with my threaded text frames. The text frames are threaded on my master page and ID is set to automatically add pages at the end of the text paragraph (first setting under automatic text flow). When I place my text, the text is placed in order on each page. But when I now format and break text to the next page, it sometimes happens that the text is not moved to the next page but jumps several pages to the end (like 2, 3, 5, 4). I can't really recreate it, sometimes it happens, sometimes it is still in order. Can someone help if I need to use a different setting or if this is a bug? Thanks! <Title renamed by moderator>
Strange when a spread is not aligned. Pages are the same format. Is there a hidden feature?
This is going to drive me NUTS. Where the heck did my master/parent pages go? There no longer at the top like they usually are. When I click on the dropdown (three bars), the option "Parent Options" is grayed out, so I can't even click on it. No other option makes sense. How can I get them to come back? I appreciate any ideas, TIA.
Dear friends,is thare a way to set the Ctrl - space bar input in inDesigh as it was in Page Maker? I.e. for switching between the two latest controls? It would be very usefull.Thank you.
Is there a way to return to a source link for a text anchored item in InDesign? For example, I have a glossary at the back of my publication, which I've linked with text anchors... once a reader clicks on the term in the book, they are directed to the appropriate glossary location but there is no way to get back to the page they were originally in. Is there a function to be able to return to the source spot wihout having to create a new text anchor? I have over 150 terms so trying to avoid having to do all this manually. <Title renamed by moderator>
