I occasionally find myself trying to align things an equal distance from the edge of a comp. I can drag a guide and specify its position, and then subtract that amount from the width of the comp and drag another one to that position, but that's a bit of a faff, especially if I want to then adjust both guides "in a bit more" for example. Many years ago, I remember using an external box (probably a hardware scope) that had a knob-adjustable guideline thing, which would display a couple of guides that were equidistant from the edge of frame. The knob would adjust the distance of both of them from the edge of frame. It was very useful. To replicate this, it'd be nice if AE provided a way of adding these "equal" guides. Maybe alt-dragging a guide onto the comp would add a pair of guides, each the same distance from the edge. They could be a different colour from regular guides, and if I adjusted the position of one, the other one of the corresponding pair would also move. This wou

Hi everyone, We’re working to expand After Effects’ HDR capabilities. Starting with AE 25.2 build 81, HDR Preview and Transmit is available. This support for Extended Dynamic Range on Mac and DirectX HDR on capable Windows machines will enable you to preview HDR compositions in full dynamic range in Adobe Color Managed projects on an HDR-capable display or through Mercury Transmit. Usage Make sure your OS/Display HDR settings are turned on (if needed), then go to Color Settings. Set your project to Adobe Color Managed, Bit Depth to 32 bits per channel and choose a Working Color Space that supports HDR, like Rec.2100 PQ. Your composition will automatically be displayed in HDR. You can also send frames in the project’s working color space to external devices via Mercury Transmit. You will need to select the proper profile in the device settings. We are working with our third-party partners to update their drivers to more fully support AE workflows. Please give this new function
Hi everyone, We're continuing our work to expand After Effects' HDR capabilities. Starting with AE 25.2 build 102, Import and Export of CICP Metadata is available, a broadcast industry standard way of specifying color spaces. What is CICP The CICP chunk specifies the video color space (primaries), transfer function, matrix coefficients and scaling factor of the image using the code points in accordance with ITU-T H.273 standard. After Effects now supports CICP metadata in MOV (ProRes), MP4(H264/HEVC), MXF(XAVC), PNG and ICC profiles if included. Usage In Project Settings, make sure you have selected an HDR compatible Working Color Space such as Rec.2100 PQ. Import a file containing CICP metadata (Quicktime, PNG file or TIFF, for example, with an ICC profile) and it will be interpreted correctly. To Export with CICP Metadata, add your composition to the RenderQueue, and select PNG Sequence from the Output module. In the Color tab, select a desired output c
Hi beta users! Version 25.2.0.098 of After Effects Beta introduces support for Animated Environment Lights. Illuminate your Advanced 3D compositions by choosing a composition, video or image layer as an Environment light source. Getting Started Previously, Environment lights were limited to HDR and EXR still-image files as sources. Now, you can use any 2D layer to light your 3D scene. Environment Lights turn their source into a sphere to light the scene from all angles, so they will treat the selected layer or composition as if it is equirectangular – a 2:1 360-degree projection where the pixels at the top and bottom are stretched. Thus, using equirectangular video (e.g. footage from an Insta360 video camera or equivalent) will provide great results. However, for many scenes, using a flat video source will still provide convincing results that are “good enough”. Environment lights will respect the overb
Colormatch between Premiere Pro beta and After Effects beta via Dynamic Link does not work. Now that I can work in the ACEScct color space in Premiere Pro beta, I am very happy with the output of my SLOG 3 footage. It was also announced that I would get the same colors in After Effects via the Dynamic Link, but this is not the case. No matter which color space I use and how I interpret the clip, the image in After Effects is far too bright and the highlights are completely overexposed. It doesn't matter whether I create a project using Dynamic Link or manually. It also doesn't matter whether I use the color space selected by Dynamic Link (which is actually the right one) or set it myself. Here are the pictures for comparison.I am using a MacBook M3 Max with Sequoia 15.3.1.Premiere Pro and AfterEffects are also up to date (both 25.2)
Howdy motion friends! Version 25.2.0x109 of After Effects Beta introduces new 3D Helper Tools! These are three new commands that reduce common 3D workflows to single clicks. Have you ever wanted to control a light as if it was a camera, just like in 3D apps? What about easily applying 2D effects to 3D models? And how about that Environment light, wouldn’t it be awesome to see a 360º representation of it in your comp? Now you can do each of these things in one click! Getting Started Select the relevant layer type and run the following commands from the menu: Layer > Create > Create 3D Layer Instance creates a Solid at the top of your composition with CC Composite referencing the selected 3D layer. Your referenced 3D layer is turned off, but if you want to retain your layer’s shadow, just turn it back on! You can also right-click on your 3D layer to access this command. Hello beta users, Version 25.2x85 of After Effects Beta introduces support for 3D model options in the Properties panel, making it fast and easy to adjust how a 3D model layer responds to lights and shadows and to select embedded animations. Compositing Options are available for all supported 3D model types; Animation Options are available for GLB and GLTF layers. Please give this new functionality a try and let us know how it’s working for you.
I have a few issues with NaN pixels in 32 bit projects. These problems are still in the latest Beta, but are the same for earlier public releases too. It does look like the problem is different when using the software renderer (worse) than the Mercury GPU accellerated renderer. I have a project that I have zipped up ready to share, but I don't seem to be able to upload a .zip Contact me to send you the file, it's less than 5 meg in size. Basically: The combination of the advanced spill supressor and lumetri plugins produces rogue pixels that are way out of range. These pixels then cause more artefacts / corruption when other effects such as blur & sharpen are used. There's a freely available "NaNny" plugin that exists to fix NaNs. Oddly, this plugin doesn't seem to work when applied to an adjustment layer. However it does work when applied in an effects stack.Adding a non-32bit plugin to the original layer also fixes the issue. NaNs
I'm trying to give a speed acceleration (Vox style) to a vertical bar for a bar graph. The problem is that when I try to do that it has no effect in the speed graph editor. I'm able to achieve the speed curve I want when I apply it to the position property of the moving rectangle, but not the height scale property of the bar. Notice that I pulled the handle of my second keyframe for the vertical bar all the way to the left to have the bar begin scaling up fast and then slow down to a stop (like I did for the rectangle position). But the speed scale curve of the vertical bar hasn't changed. That's my issue.
Occasionally, when attempting to re-time a video clip, I encounter issues such as a black screen appearing in the middle of the re-timing keys, video inversion, or video flipping upside down.
Hi everyone! We're excited to announce that starting in version 24.5.0x41 of After Effects Beta introduces support for per-character control of text and paragraph styling in Expressions. This long-requested addition to Expressions builds on recent per-character scripting API updates to unlock powerful text styling capabilities that are able to respond to changes in text content and can be saved and shared as presets. These new options can also streamline template design by making it possible to configure alignment and paragraph styling in a single layer rather than turning on and off multiple synced copies of a layer. A benefit of per-character control is automatic reflowing of text such as when scaling letters, using superscript, and using a different font, just as you would expect from using substring styling from the Character panel. Getting Started Make sure you have your expression engine set to Javascript.
I updated AE Beta to the last version a few weeks ago and it simply crashes everytime I launch it.(System Apple m2 max, last OS version.) Every time the same crash message : I avoid updating AE regular to the last version, cause if this happens too I won't be able to work anymore...
I don't know if it was the AE update today or the mac update my company pushed through (15.1.1) or a combo of both, but I cannot use Beta right now. Works for a few minutes and then continuously gives me a myriad of pop up error messages. Won't let me save once they start appearing. Very frustrating. Sample error messages and system info in screenshots. I've now downloaded the latest regular version of AE and so far it appears to be working. Problem must be beta?
Hey folks, recently using After Effects beta, i'm getting a lot of this kind of error. Happens suddenly and I havent found anything online about it. The error happens with files in the project and other things that I don't understand. It aways show up: "After effects beta warning: unable to access resource..." and then it freezes, I have to force quit. In this project of the print screen, it's only a layer with cc ball and fractal noise, but it already happened with file (psd, ai) and other names like on the print screen that I don't remember.
Hello! Today we’re introducing new UI in After Effects Beta that helps you visualize when 3D layers are rendered together. The new binning indicators for 3D layers show you which 3D layers render together in the same 3D space, which allows them to intersect and cast shadows on each other. We call such a group of 3D layers a “bin”. Starting in After Effects Beta version 18.1.0.3, you’ll see new icons in for 3D layers the 3D Layer column in the Timeline panel. An outline around the 3D icons indicates which layers are in the same 3D bin and thus render together. Here's an example of what it looks like: It’s important to understand that this new UI does not change how After Effects renders 3D layers. The 3D binning indicators are only a UI enhancement, part of our ongoing effort to improve the experience of working in
We're excited to announce that starting in After Effects (Beta) 24.2.0 build 22, you'll have the choice to export your .mogrt thumbnail with a video preview of the primary composition. Additionally, all .mogrt thumbnails will export at a full 16:9 resolution instead of being letterboxed. In After Effects, in the Essential Graphics panel, select Export Motion Graphics Template… Select the Include video preview checkbox to create a video preview, or deselect it to create a static thumbnail. In Premiere Pro, open the Essential Graphics panel and hover scrub over your .mogrt to see it animate. Tell us what you think, your feedback is appreciated!

Today is one of those really exciting days for us on the After Effects team. The ongoing work building out our 3D design space now gets the best addition yet – native support for 3D models. As of today’s build (23.1 Build 44) you can now import .OBJ, .GLB or .GLTF models directly into your project, and drop them into your composition. We are anxious to get this into your hands so we can learn more about the features you want us to focus on. This is not meant to replace a dedicated 3D product. We are building a 3D toolbox to enhance your creative options directly within After Effects. Choose CMD/CTRL + I (or File > Import > File) and import your model from the browser window. When you drag your model into the comp, a Model Settings dialog will appear. You can also reopen this dialog any time from the Layer menu. Change the settings to get the model to the sizing you want, or choose the ‘Make Comp Size’ button to have AE do it for you.

Hi all, The latest beta of After Effects, 25.2x4, now includes support for H.264 in MKV. Our support is particularly focused on customers using MKV files from OBS (Open Broadcaster Software). We support AAC and PCM audio. We’d love to get your feedback on this new feature.
I can't copy paste text from other apps into After Effects tekst layer. Not from InDesign or Pages or any other app.
The release notes for the latest version of After Effects states that MKV files are supported, but neither 18.4 nor the latest Beta can import them. They aren't included in the 'supported file types' in the import dialog, and if forced to import by setting the file types to '*.*' random errors about file types are thrown up, depending on which codecs are embedded:
