Forced line break in TOC and running headers not replaced by space in ID 19.0

I noticed a change of behavior in the latest version of InDesign (2024, 19.0) in regards to forced line break in table of contents and running headers. In previous version (InDesign 2023, 18.5) forced line break was always replaced by space when included in TOC with Remove Forced Line Break option checked. It behaved similarly in running headers.

In the latest version mentioned above forced line break is just removed causing the last and the first words of the lines separated by forced line break to become conjoined if preceding space is not present — which caused double space to appear in previous version. This causes quite a lot of problems when moving between versions. This feature should be at least stable between different versions or allow for the user to choose preferred behavior on document level.

Hi, thank you both for your answer. Sadly, it seems I’am not able to reproduce the issue anymore. I uninstalled the previous version of InDesign including user settings shortly after the update. The fresh install I did this afternoon behaves the same as the InDesign 19.0. Looks like it was probably some issue related to user settings or corrupted installation somehow related to this old issue: https://community.adobe.com/t5/indesign-discussions/double-spacing-bug-in-running-header-feature/m-p/11592917.

Hi @matejmalek87,

Thank you for reporting the issue. In addition to what Palak has requested, please also share the details of your operating system, or a short video showing the behavior would really help us understand better.

We will try our best to help.

Thanks,

Harshika

Oh, and just to answer your question, I am running macOS Sonoma 14.1 with no other known issues across all Creative Cloud.

Hi @matejmalek87,

We tried reproducing the issue at our end, but we do not see any differences in 18.5 and 19.0.

Can you please help us narrow down the isse by providing more details like - share the snapshot showing the differences visible in both builds for you, and also a sample file would really help to reproduce the issue at our end.
