Advanced 3D bugged shape layer issue

Explorer ,
Jan 13, 2025 Jan 13, 2025

1. 25.1.0

2. MacOS Sonoma 14.6.1

Hi AE team!

I've stumbled across a bug when loading layers with multiple elements inside them and making them 3D.

It appears to have a difficult time deciding what to show in front, while the Classic 3D renderer doesn't have this issue.

Advanced renderer:

Clasic 3D:

I've attached a file with this icon. Hope that helps!

Kind regards,
Onno

Hi @nos3f1,

Thank you for flagging this issue! It has already been reported and is actively being looked into.

We appreciate you taking the time to post both screenshots and a .aep. It really helps with troubleshooting and solving problems more quickly.

Thanks,
- David, After Effects Engineering Team

Hi again @nos3f1,

Apologies I forgot to mention this earlier, but there is actually a workaround for this. The issue lies with how opaque shapes are rendered, but transparent shapes do not experience the same problem. I downloaded your project and confirmed that if you set Group 1's Opacity to 99% (see screenshot), the z-fighting is fixed.

It looks like you have 3D layers on the same plane. Try separating them by 1 pixel.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for taking the time to look into the issue and comment on it.

I'd figured it already that there was some index thing going on because both shapes are on the same spot. The thing that made me file a bug report, however, was the different behavior between the render engines.

Thanks for the solutions! If I'm planning to use 3D for a purpose like that, I'll use the workaround method. :ˆ)

Kind regards,
Onno
