Advanced 3D is not working on a high-end PC

Hello everyone,

I've been experiencing an issue with the advanced 3D render engine. Whenever I attempt to insert a 3D object or enable the advanced 3D engine, After Effects immediately crashes.

What confuses me is that on older-spec PCs with GPUs like the Nvidia 1660 or 3050, the engine works perfectly fine, and I'm able to animate and view the 3D objects.

My current PC specs are:

  • Intel Core i7-13700K, 3400 MHz, 16 Core(s), 24 Logical Processor(s)
  • Nvidia RTX 4060 Ti 8GB
  • 32GB RAM
Nvidia and Intel drivers are updated.

Could it be a hardware issue with my PC? If so, does anyone have any ideas on what I should troubleshoot?
I'm attaching After Effects log of the exit that happens when I turn on Advanced 3D.

Hi @martynasv31339915

Ok amending this post:
in one of your messages you said:

" At one point in the After Effects Beta, a message popped up stating, "Advanced 3D is not supported by the current hardware,"

That is the biggest clue. Advanced 3D does not work when there is an integrated GPU and another GPU, i.e. 2 GPUs. The Intel vs Nvidia collision is the issue here. So, yes... the hardware is the issue. 😞

I'm curious if there are some other things we can try to get you back on track.

Hi @123755873126wh

That is no bueno! A few quick questions so we can try and get to the bottom of things...

  1. What version of After Effects are you on?
  2. Did this work before and now it doesn't?
  3. Can you install the latest Beta and tell me if you get a different result? We've had some bug fixes in this area in the last few months
  4.  Can you press CTRL + SHIFT + Right-click on the AE App Icon and choose "Run as Administrator" at launch and see if that resolves the issue?

Hi @123755873126wh

Me again! Ok so it looks like we may have an issue with prefs and GPUs.

If you could:

  1. Open Preferences
  2.  Go to Start Up and Repair
  3.  Navigate to the button that says "Reveal in Explorer"
  4.  Move that file to the Desktop or somewhere that we can find it later and that it remains preserved
  5.  Close AE
  6. Relaunch AE while holding CTRL + Alt + Shift until a dialog appears that asks if you want to reset prefs
  7.  Hit OK

Now try and import a 3D Model or change your renderer to Advanc

Okay, I'll do it in the morning, I'm deep into the night. Wouldn't it be
easier to ask the person who made version 24.1 to convert it to my version?
I'm honestly new to this program.

You could certainly ask that person to save the project back to 23.*, yes.

yay, I figured it out, version 24.1 was defective. I had to install 24.0 and everything is fine.

Hello,

I just wanted to apologize for not replying for so long. This issue was with my work computer, and we had an IT specialist working on it. They tried running it in Safe Mode, disabling the iGPU, updating Nvidia drivers, but nothing worked.

Surprisingly, the problem was actually solved by running After Effects as an administrator! Since then, everything runs perfectly. The GPU manages to render 3D animations on high quality with multiple 3D models and environmental lights 👍.

I'm sharing this information with you in case it might be helpful. Perhaps it will be addressed in the next patch, as I prefer not to always run After Effects as an administrator when animating in 3D.

Anyways, I really appreciate all of your help 😁!

Wow @martynasv31339915 !!

This is GREAT NEWS!!! Also ... I really want to investigate this further now. There must be some read-write permissions that 3D requires. I'm asking devs now!

Thanks so much for sharing the news and I hope you're on your way to making some cool THREE DEEEE stuff!

So sorry to bug you again! We are trying to get to the bottom of this.I was hoping you could tell me if there were any other added variables in your set-up.

  • Were y'all pulling files from Dropbox, Google Drive or some other shared drive?
  • Were you ever able to send a crash report and if so what email did you add? We are hungry to see these crash reports for more clues to resolve this for other users.
    • please feel free to send me the email that was used in the crash report privately if so.

Thanks again!

I appreciate your further investigation!

To answer your question, we are using a OneDrive server where we store and access all our work files.

There hasn't been a time when the program would send a crash report. It always pops up a message giving me a chance to save the file before it closes, and after that, it shows the error message that I shared in this post.

Update. I don't think that is limited to adding 3d models into a scene but also when using 2.5 layers. It looks like that almost everytime I try to use the Advanced 3d renderer that my AFX crashes.

Hello Dacia,

I have a similar problem and opened a forum post https://community.adobe.com/t5/after-effects-bugs/adding-3d-object-from-substance-to-a-comp-crashes-...

I just did a test and opening up AFX as an Admin also "solved" my problem. I was always working from a local drive even tough I have Dropbox installed on my machine and use it normally for work but when trying to import 3d models or even switching to the Advanced 3d renderer I was doing it using my local drive as was just doing some tests.

I also never got a crash report or was able to send onw as AFX only gave me option to save the file before crashing on me.

On my laptop is a 3080 RTX and the AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX iGPU installed.

Hope that helps a bit

Sorry to hear that you are facing the same problem. Perhaps the online clouds are actually interfering with After Effects somehow?
Welp, hopefully, the developers will figure it out somehow 😞

Thanks for sharing the logs. Please share the 3D models you tried to import. Also, are they saved in a folder that's synced with the cloud (Google Drive, One Drive, etc)? If so, what happens if you save them to a different folder without any sync service and try to import? Feel free to DM me.

Looking forward to your response.

I've tried several files and different formats and they all end up with the error. Even simple basic shapes. Changing folders or safe mode didn't help.

BUT on my other pc the same files were working correctly.

So I guess the problem is somewhere in the hardware. And it's funny since the pc with the error is newer and more powerful in every way. Also there were never any problems with it working in Cinema4d or Blender.

Hi Y'all!

@Clement312367814ka1 @Lea33876545pslq @zeynep34020505wb1c @Alan282340160en8

We are seeing this error in some weird scenarios and trying hard to pin it down. One thing that has been shared, is that running After Effects in "Admin Mode" has resolved the issue for a few users.  See this thread: here

Another common thread is that some users are trying to import models that are on Google Drive, Dropbox, or OneDrive.

Is this something that you're trying to do?
Are you able to import the models if you put the model on the desktop or some other local folder?

Does running in Admin Mode work?

@Febrio Gaza22432904mdjw mentioned that his C drive was full and he fixed it by presumably making space?

If anyone can share their models that would be great too!

Thank you,

Dacia

In addition to what DaciaSaenz suggested, you can install the After Effects beta. Several similar issues have been fixed and published in the beta version.

Let us know if that brings any change.

Thanks,

Sorry for the delayed response. What version of the Nvidia GPU driver are you using? Try performing a clean installation of NVIDIA Studio Driver 551.23 (https://adobe.ly/4cs7gxZ).

Let us know if that works.

Note: Moving this thread from Bugs to Discussions for troubleshooting.

I have version 551.86 of the Studio drivers on my system.

Running AFX in Admin mode seems to work for now.

As I found out in another forum post it might have to do with my system having an onboard Graphics card.

Salut,

Merci,
Dacia

The After Effects Beta version continues to display the same error even after running it with administrator privileges and disabling the integrated graphics processor (iGPU). The system specifications are an i7-14700K CPU and an RTX 4060 GPU.
