Draft 3D feature makes AE close itself

Explorer ,
Dec 19, 2024 Dec 19, 2024

When turned on, draft 3d feature makes after effects closes each time when that project file is opened. It says "Before quitting, you have one chance to save your project" and after I save it, it closes itself.
Doesnt happen when I open the file while holding Ctrl, but after releasing Ctrl it happens again.
After effects is not saying the software is crashed either. It just automatically closes itself for no reason.
What could be causing this?

Version: 24.6.4
Graphics card: rtx 3060
available ram for after effects: 24 gb
Processor: not that good

Thanks for the report! I'd love to have a look at your project to see what's going wrong.

Can you please collect your project and share with me?

Please feel free to DM a link to your project if you do not feel comfortable sharing it publicly.

WeTransfer, Dropbox, Google Drive... whatever works best for you.
Thanks!

My project is mostly made of png's, camera movements and nulls but I think it doesnt have anything to do with the project at all. It happens in a blank project as well. For example; I just created a project and made an ink transition from my own png's (no extension), turned them 3d from pannel, clicked draft 3d and it happened again. I'm sure it is something to do with the program. Some people said "delete and re-upload the program" in forums to cases like this but if I do it it'll take a bit time to install my extensions again which I use a lot. That's why I wanted to ask.

Many thanks for the additional information. Yes I do not doubt that it's something to do with the program, the trick is to figure out how to reproduce the problem you're seeing, so we can fix it. So thank you so much for helping me with that.

From your description, here's what I did to try to reproduce what I think you're describing:

Steps to reproduce:
- New Project, New Comp, Advanced 3D
- Add some pngs (that have no ".png" extension on them?)
- Add them to the Timeline and make the layers 3D
- Click Draft3D
Described result:
- AE puts up a dialog that says "Before quitting, you have one chance to save your project" and after I save it, the app exits.
Expected result:
- No crash, pngs should render.

I'm testing using the latest version: AE 25.0.1 (Build 2) Stable, installed through Creative Cloud, on Windows 11.

- I wasn't quite sure what was meant by "png's (no extension)", so I tried removing the .png extension from the files. But I couldn't figure out how to import them like that, since they don't show up in the Import dialog, nor is it possible to drag the files in like that. So I had to use regular .png files with extensions. If I should be doing something different there, please let me know.
- Since you're using an "rtx 3060", you must be using Windows (rather than Mac), is that right? And what version please? Windows 10 or 11?

Unfortunately I still have not managed to reproduce any issue, such as the "Before quitting, you have one chance to save your project" dialog you describe, using these steps.

But here are a few things you can try on your end, that might help:

1) When launching After Effects, try "Run as Administrator".
2) If any of your media (like those .png files) are on network drives, try copying them to a local drive to see if that helps.
3) Try launching AE in "Safe Mode" (press Ctrl+Alt+Shift while launching). This will disable third-party plugins and use default preferences.

Thanks!

Brother, IT IS about your program, and you have to understand this. I am sick of adobe employees acting like their program is the most perfect program in the world. This is not the first problem and not gonna be the last problem it seems like.

None of the solutions you provide solves my problem, and opening AE in safe mod is ridicilous because I need my extensions, thats why they are there for.

Its also miraculous that you didn't understand I was talking about I havent use any extension when I said " For example; I just created a project and made an ink transition from my own png's (no extension)". I'm talking about I DIDNT USE ANY EXTENSIONS, so no extension can cause such a problem. Nor any extension was open at that time.

I'm using windows 10

None of the few things you provide solved my problem and I already tried them.

Kind regards,

Tibet

Hi @Tibet S,

This is a reminder to keep your tone kind and respectful in these forums. This section of the AE forums is for bug reports, not support cases. If you are looking for immediate help, please contact our Support team directly.

Third-party extensions can (and do) cause issues just by being installed, even if they are not used in the current project. Running AE in Safe Mode can provide important information on whether the issue is related to any installed plug-ins or the current application preferences.

I noted that you are encountering this issue in After Effects version 24.6.4. Does the same issue occur in the latest 25.1 version? Both versions are able to be installed at once, so you could try the new version while keeping the old one.

In order to see why AE is closing when you turn on Draft 3D, an application log would be the most helpful. Please follow these steps and share a link to the resulting log file.

  1. Open the Help menu
  2. Select "Enable Logging" and close AE when prompted
  3. Relaunch AE and reproduce the issue (e.g. enable the Draft 3D renderer)
  4. Go to "C:\Users\<your user name>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\After Effects\24.6\logs"
  5. Upload and share a link to the "After Effects Log.txt" file in the "logs" folder

Thank you for any further information you can provide,

- John, After Effects Engineering Team
