Flickering Bug After Effects

Community Beginner ,
Mar 20, 2025 Mar 20, 2025

Okay, so I have a huge problem that I've been trying to fix for days, whenever I click on anything inside of my project the whole screen just flickers and when I use effects, it flickers, basically just when I do anything, it flickers like crazy, even when I'm previewing. There's a video attached to this post where you can see the problem, I really hope someone can help me🙏

If folks are still having this issue, I'd like to try to figure out if it's a few different issues or just one.

1. If you have footage that is flickering to black frames, please make sure you've upgraded to 25.3.2, then purge your disk cache, and then see if the problem persists. The latest version of AE has a fix for black frames showing up where footage should be.

2. If this is related to your comp panel itself flickering, not the footage, that is more likely related to a change to use a

I checked back one by one all versions of 2025, and all were flickering. I downloaded the latest 2024 version and now can't open a single file because all my newer projects were created with the 2025 version. There must be a solution! Plus, everything is flickering even when a project is rendering!
So, having no other options, I updated AE again - even with that problem - to the latest 2025 version.
But I can't work this way!!! There must be something Adobe can do!!!!

Feel free to share the URL. A video of the issue would be helpful.

Hi ^^ I had the same flickering problem with a video asset (*.mov), I activated the 3d mode of my layer then advanced 3d (by default classic 3d), then deactivated the 3d of my layer and there as if by magic it works again, bug I think.

I am having this exact same issue in 25 and in the Beta.  There is no rhyme or reason to it.  The only work around I have found is that I switch back and forth between the Beta and 25 and immedialy render without previewing the timeline.  I can't open the project in '24 because the client created it in 25.  This needs to be addressed immediatly by Adobe as this has added an immense amount of time to my workflow!

To add, mine is only flickering in the timeline on the footage when I hit play. Mine is not strobing in the panels at all.

A friend of mine is having the same problem. Disabling acceleration doesn't help. Works fine in 2024 but doesn't in any version of 2025.

Friend has the same problem. We tried disabling accelaration. We set refresh rate to 60Hz. Still doesn't work.

Hello @julienb75676318, thank you for your help, but it didn't work.
I made 3D all my footage (mov, mp4), changed to advanced 3D, and deactivated without any luck. Even did it on comps with footage inside, no luck either.

I have figured out an odd workaround for this issue.  If you are working in 25, get everything finished to the point where you are ready to render.  The flickering can be present (mine will also flip the image and rollback past in and out points).  Save your project and immediately open in AE Beta.  Do not play on the timeline or make any adjustments just immediately render through AE and not through Media encoder.  This worked for me every time and the reverse also works where if you start in Beta and then go back to 25 to render.  Not great but better than nothing.

Hey Max, thanks for trying some of these workarounds. Does the beta version show this flickering issue on your computer? Here's how to download the beta version of After Effects: https://adobe.ly/3Gj7g8e

Sorry for the frustration, we'll help however we can.

This bug also affects the beta version for me.

OS: Win 11,

CPU: AMD,

GPU: Nvidia 3080, Game Ready Driver 576.80

Closing/opening AE doesn't solve it.

Open your beta project in AE25 and render it.  Basically get all of the work done with flickering in Beta and when you're ready to render, save it and open in 25 and then render.  That is the only work around that has worked for me.  If you open it in 25 and start scrubbing the timeline or making too many changes the flickering will come back.

I'm having an issue with after effects on windows where panning around the composition page, playing the project, or doing anything will cause the composition window to flicker. I've tried disabling harware accelereation, updating driver, updating after effects, but the issue is still persisting.

Is there anything that can be done to fix this as the program runs alright besides this issue.

I'm attaching my system specs as well as a recording of the problem in action.

Hi there,

Thanks for reaching out and sharing the details. I am investigating a similar issue. Do you have a dedicated GPU installed? If yes, could you share the make and model and the version of the driver that's installed? Here's an article that should help you with that: https://adobe.ly/3FZNPBw

Looking forward to your response.

Thanks,
Nishu
