AE 23.1.0 (Build 83) has a missing footage bug on MacOS Ventura 13.1.
Problem appeared after upgrading to Ventura and reinstalling everything. All project files are stored in Dropbox which now has a problem of it's own - every necessary file has to be made as Available-offline. After making most of project files available offline, some footage was still missing and After Effects greeted me with 16 pairs of error messages saying "file 'somefile.mp4' cannot be imported – this "Moov" file is damaged or unsupported" and "The source compression type is not supported (86::1)" - nothing new - I have had this dropbox related issue on MacOS 12 - except there I could just search in finder for missing file, make it Available-offline, go back to AE, double click on missing footage item, select just synced footage and everything was fine (after I did it again and again with every missing file).
Now it doesn't work.
Now I search in finder for missing footage, make it Available-Offline, but after I double click it in AE to replace it, I'm getting same 2 error messages "The source compression type is not supported (86::1)" and "file 'somefile.mp4' cannot be imported – this "Moov" file is damaged or unsupported". I can play this file in Finder, VLC, I can even queue and re-encode it with Adobe Media Encoder without a problem, but I'm unable to import it to AE, or replace missing footage with this recently synced file.
The workaround is to Duplicate the file in finder, so instead of "video.mp4" I get also "video copy.mp4" - and then I can replace missing footage with this new file.
2nd workaround is to rename recently synced file in finder > video.mp4 to video2.mp4 works just fine, except, I'm using same file in different projects and this would break my workflow after Adobe finds a solution for this bug.

One more thing - if I delete original file "video.mp4", and rename duplicated file "video copy.mp4" to original file name "video.mp4" - I'm getting same error. I also Purged all memory and cache, and even deleted AE cache folder - didn't help.

Hi rtdc,
Sorry for your issue. We can get it checked.
Is it happening with a particular project or with all of them? Does it happen with the projects that are not saved in Dropbox (or any other synced folder)? Also, what are the details of the footage you're having issue with?
Let us know, we're here to help.
Thanks,
Nishu

I have checked many projects that use external video footage - they all have same issue. All these projects and video footage files use Dropbox. This problem is somehow related to original path of missing footage (that has Zero bytes filesize upon opening AE project file). Zero bytes file size is because this footage is still only in cloud and onlu file container is available in folder.
I have fount 3rd workaround - After making missing footage Available-offline, I can create new folder and move this video file that AE still assumes as damaged one to this new folder (assets/video.mp4 to assets/new/video.mp4), and then AE accepts it.

Nishu_kush, any update on this issue? I was hoping this will be resolved in 23.2.1 that just came out, but it is still there. It even got worse - now I have error messages also about photoshop files (same issue as with mp4 and png).

Experiencing the same thing here: all files that have been offline from dropbox need renaming or changing locations in order to work, be that video footage or photographs. This severly afftects workflow when collaborating between designers. Need a solution rather than a workaround.

I'm experiencing the same thing!! Jan 6 2023 and I just upgraded to Mac studio with latest Monterey 10.6. After updating to AE2023, I made all the olders in my Dropbox relevant to the project "offline" or local. And After Effects won't recognize the movie files. Same as original poster, if I duplicate as "copy" AE will accept. If I take that copy and rename as teh original, it doesn't work. Crazy! I can't go around renaming a pile of assets "copy" just to open the project.

Just to add to this, it's a similar problem across all Adobe products on Ventura when using dropbox.
Linked files used to download automatically from Dropbox when they were needed in Adobe products, now they don't. You have to manually 'make available offline' in Dropbox.
It's just a bit more of a problem in AE as they won't relink EVEN after they have been made available offline in Dropbox.

I complain not because AE doesn't relink them automatically after they have been made available offline in Dropbox, but because AE doesn't allow to relink even manually, and the only workaround is to create a copy of same file to relink it to. But it is not possible to rename this copy back to original name, because AE doesn't like it this way.. Now, two months later I have gigabytes with "copy" footage because of this.

Same issue for me. I also discovered those workarounds you use, but it's super messy and annoying.

I have the same problem, but only with jpg, wav, m4a and mov files, as far as I know now. PNG files work fine, PDF as well

Also having this issue, can a representitive from Adobe confirm that a solution for this is in the works?

Recently upgraded my system to Sonoma 14.4.1, I'm experiencing the same problem with files on dropbox. I'm unable to relink from the same file after its been made available offline, but duplicating it and renaming it still works as mentioned above. Some footage automatically relinked after I cleared AE cache and reloaded, but not all (it specifically seems to have extra trouble with jpgs). I'm using AE 24.3.
