Hello,
Has anyone experienced the following issue and found a solution for it?
Right after Update to El Capitan 10.11 the After Effects 2015 stopped ram previewing in real time.
No matter what i do it won’t work.
I have a latest MAC Pro 2.7 GHz 12-Core with 64GB ram.
The AE 2014 still works though.
Everybody who is having this issue please install the latest update: After Effects CC (November 2017) Bug-Fix Update Is Now Available that is supposed to finally close this thread for good! please report if this issue has been resolved. ![]()
if you can't see the update yet, wait a while until you see it. try relaunching Creative Cloud app by typing Ctrl+Alt+R. I see it.

this update is 14.0.1 and is a bug fix for many disturbing issues especially for Mac users. it does not fix all the bugs that are new

Its funny how the 2015 Splash image kind of nailed the version, its got a horror show thing going on, just like AE 2015 CC.

What version of AE are you running? Update your AE version to 13.7.2 and it should help a lot.

I'm kinda afraid to install the update as AE is working fine with the docked panel under the timeline trick. Can anyone confirm that this has solved all the issues with real time previews, or are people experiencing the 2 second audio delay bug that StaphaneA is experiencing?

I am successfully RAM previewing audio and keyframing with audio just fine in the new update. This is with a 1920 x 1080, 23.976 comp. I have not tested with 4K footage yet.
It works really well and I am trying to break the habit I just developed of hiding the timeline during RAM previews.

And great to know that after nearly 6 month since the beginning of this thread Adobe finally came with a partial solution of this particular problem.
It's really incredible that it took them so long to address this crucial problem for a company that has never been as profitable...

hahahaha! <---- this is not a real laugh, it's more like the kind of laugh before u tear all the hair out and bang your head against the dask... and probably get locked away in psychiatric clinic.
Just as soon as everything seem to be working with the helpful tip of adding a render queue under the timeline.... I have updated the after effects... AND IT BROKE AGAIN!!! WTF!!!??? really?
Is adobe just f*cking with me??? anyone had this issue after recent update, out it's just me?
UPDATES SUPPOSE TO FIX THINGS, NOT BREAK THEM!!!

This is exactly why I'm afraid to update and haven't yet. Its sad that we have to be cautious with every update these days. Like you said, they are supposed to fix things but updates only seem to break things these days.
What exactly is broken after the update? Can you give specifics?

I mean, with me it's the workaround that doesn't work anymore.. but it might be just my machine. I'm still trying to figure out if there is anything i can do to make it playback normal again.

Can't believe it man!
I haven' updated neither, too afraid of a "NEW BUG" like this!
Anyway all this situation is completely silly. This "trick" of docking the render window under the time line in other to make previews is ridiculous...
I'm having zero confidence in Adobe those days. (That extends to Apple with their El Capitan that is beautiful piece of crap as well.)

I keep getting tempted to try a need update in case it fixes this other bug I get whenever I close out of AE: Re: 13.6.1 - After Effects error: internal verification failure, sorry! {stuff not in the right sort...
..but I simply can't risk it - I'm stacked up with work for the next few weeks across different projects - and I think at least better the devil you know whilst I'm hammering the app.
In other news, I have moved to Modo for some 3D work I had on my books - it's fun but whoever said on this chain there are 'other apps out there if you don't like AE' and included the likes of C4D, Modo, Fusion, Nuke etc. I would just like to respectfully say that they are talking out of their respective arses. There really is n where to go past AE for day to day motion graphics.

I actually never had this problem until the latest update (13.7.1). Now ram preview doesn't work smoothly anymore. Not more than 15 fps (4k)... ![]()
Worked perfectly fine in Windows 10 until yesterday!

Hey "vfxjunky", so did you find a solution to the problem we're discussing?
Are you able to have real time preview now with AE 13.7.2 or AE 13.7.1?
I'd like to know if the update makes things better or worse?

I'm on 13.7.2.
I was not able to find a solution yet. But I noticed that I only have this issue on some projects. Where as before it was on every project. The ranger window workaround works 70% of the time. Not sure why or what specific workflow/ effect couses it but it cant do realtime preview sometimes. But the same project in CS6 has no issues.

Ok, Thanks for the quick answer.
I'm finishing a project now and there are so many bugs in 13.7.0 that I'm tempted to update next week...
For the moment with "the render queue workaround" at least I'm having real time preview.
What's the "ranger window workaround", a new workaround for 13.7.2??!

sorry... typo.
i was typing on my phone ![]()
"Render" Window Workaround.
It the one where you put a Render Queue Window (or any other window) on the bottom of the timeline.
And that seems to fix an issue most of the time (But not all the time as i found out with a new update!)

Ok, Thanks for your answers vfxjunky...
I understand, better stay on 13.7.0 then.
Adobe announced updates soon for AE and Premiere with "super smooth playback".
We'll see.

Try using the program on one display. My preview does not work on two monitors. I think it has to do with the AMD card and the lack of GPU support for that card. I'm using a newer Mac Pro circular model. changing the folders was also a great tip... that also helped.

Well yeah, it works on one display, but that kind of defeats the purpose. I can't fit everything on one display. Using one display is very frustrating and time consuming.

also problems with the playback here....
the ''whats new'' page said, like always, ''new improvements and bug fixes'' , faster playback, gpu, blabla.
so i did.. but it's only worse.. getting really tired of these ''updates''..
i used to have a version which worked just fine.

What version of AE are you running, rickrickrickrick? Is it 13.8.0.144?
Do you have the Cache Before Playback option checked for the keystroke you're using to initiate your preview?
What happens if you make your timeline panel really small (especially vertically so that it's really short top to bottom)?
What happens if you dock another panel (like the Libraries panel) underneath your timeline?
What happens if you hide the timeline panel (you could press ` to make your composition panel full screen during preview)?

At the office we're on AE 13.8.0.144, on OSX 10.9.5.
Preview is worthless. Whether I'm skipping frames, checking the cache before playback option, selecting short work areas or entire comps. It simply never plays back at the appropriate framerate. And since it speeds up and slows down, it's really quite impossible to tell if the rhythm of the animation is working. It's actually something of a workflow breaker. I have to render out segments, plop them into an NLE, play them back, then go back into AE to make tweaks, rinse and repeat.
I don't understand why it can't just use some of those 26GB of RAM to buffer something and then play back. I don't care about its ability to playback uncached at all. I mean, well, it'd be nice if it could, but, I've never been able to do that in the past, so it's never been a part of my workflow. The work flow is, make something cool, (RAM) Preview it, does it look good, yes, render it, send it to the NLE, wipe my hands of it. If I can't check to see if what I'm making works, it renders (pun) the software broken.
I've tried minimizing my timeline, shrinking it, etc, etc. It has zero effect.
Can we get some sort of clarity on whether the old functionality can be restored until somebody figures out how to make it work with the new system, or, barring that, how long it will be before we can use this software effectively again.
