After Effects crashes when opening a large project file. Why?

Every time I open/import a larger project file, like 100mb for example, I get a 'not responding' error and it crashes.

This does not occur with smaller project files however.

I've already cleared the disk cache, allocated more memory, uninstalled and reinstalled, deleted my preferences and restarted my computer. I don't know what else I can try. Any suggestions?

Without any system information and details about the project contents plus ideally of course a snippet from the actual crash log nobody can tel lyou much. You need to be more specific and provide this info.

Hi defaultwpr4ezxacelb,

Sorry for your issue and thanks for sharing the screen recording.

As Mylenium mentioned, would you mind sharing your system specifications (CPU, GPU, RAM, OS) and crash log? It'll help us to troubleshoot the issue properly.

Along with that, what happens if you open After Effects by clicking its icon and then import the project? Does it help?

Let us know the results.

Thanks,

Nishu

Thank you for your response,

There is no crash log in the 16.0 folder, however there is one in the OS:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\After Effects general folder.

There are crash logs that exists in other versions of After Effects so ill use those. In 16.1 and 18.2, there exists the crash file AfterFX_2021-06-27_201841_DESKTOP-8CT535T. Versions 16.0 and 18.2.1 dont have any.

Thanks for sharing the details.

What's the version of After Effects you're using? Also, did importing the project help?

It could be related to a specific project. Could you test that? Could you try opening a few projects that are similar to the one you're having issues with?

Let us know the results.

Thanks,

Nishu
