After Effects crashes when scanning folders

New Here ,
Aug 24, 2025 Aug 24, 2025

For whatever reason, whenever I launch After Effects now, the app freezes when scanning folders and immediately crashes. No error message shows up.
I tried basically everything.

  • Starting in safe mode, disabling third party plug-ins (didn't have any to begin with), resetting preferences.
  • Uninstalling, re-installing, manually deleting all files relating to After Effects and then installing it again.
  • It always crashes at the splash screen when it's scanning folders. The folder it crashes at changed every time.

I went into Windows settings and gave high-performance to After Effects but that didn't work either.
It was literally working fine less than 4 days ago and I finished a project on it. Now it does this and I'm truly stumped on how to fix it.

Apparently you need to delete the file microsoft.ai.machinelearning.dll. It is located in: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CC\File Formats

I had the same problem and this solved the issue for me. I got it from this conversation

Have you also checked the graphic card settings? Do you use the latest driver?
