After Effects error (3 :: 0)

I keep getting this error (files exist but couldn't be open for reading) when I work with my hard disk, I don't want to keep all the files related my work in my computer because they take up too much storage. But I can't use some of the files when I do that (some of them can be open) What should I do? This error appeared from time to time but after the latest mac sonoma update it gone worse 😞

Are you on macOS or Windows? The issue could be the user permissions. Please check if the file has read and write permissions.

I use mac and I get this error with all of my files (including the photos and videos that I recorded) how can I check the permissions?

When you say "hard disk", do you mean external disk? For testing purposes, can you copy the file to your computer to see if it opens from there?

Yes I mean external disk and it opens when I move the file to my desktop. But like I said, I don't want to work like that, the files are take up too much storage. Also before the macOS sonoma update I was able to work with my external disk

I don't use After Effects; I'm just the volunteer who moved your post to this forum.

I know that Photoshop does not support opening from and saving to network drives and external drives, so I tried to find a similar post for After Effects. I found this for Premiere Pro that addresses "Networks and removable media with Digital Video":

It's almost identical to the help file from Photoshop:

Both give a recommended workflow:

Recommended workflow

Technical Support strongly recommends working in digital media files directly on the local hard disk. To prevent data loss, save files to your hard disk first. Then transfer them to the network or removable drive in the Finder or in Windows Explorer. To retrieve files, copy them in the Finder or in Windows Explorer from the network or removable drive to your hard disk. This workflow avoids problems that occur when network system setups or removable media device drivers are incompatible with the operating system or video editing software.

Since moving a file to your computer works, you might want to use the recommended workflow for the time being until you learn more or can sort this out.

I'm not positive this applies to After Effects, so I've tagged Adobe Employee @nishu_kush who knows more. 

Again, I am a volunteer and do not use After Effects, but I do see this issue on the Photoshop forum.
