FAQ: How to fix "Display Acceleration Disabled" in After Effects

Mar 20, 2020 Mar 20, 2020

Copied

If you're running into a problem where After Effects displays a message on the Composition panel that says Display Acceleration Disabled, follow the suggestions given in this post to fix the problem.

macOS:
• Make sure your MacBook is connected to the power source
• Go to Preferences > Display and toggle Hardware Accelerate Composition, Layer, and Footage Panels
• Go to Preferences > Video Preview and toggle Enable Mercury Transmit

Windows:
• Update the on-board and dedicated graphics drivers of the computer. If this happens after updating the graphics driver, reinstall the previous version of the driver

NOTE: Nvidia driver version 442.92 seems to cause this problem on many systems. If you have installed this driver, please reinstall the previous version

• If your computer has Nvidia graphics, make sure to update the GeForce Experience software as well
• Go to Preferences > Display and toggle Hardware Accelerate Composition, Layer, and Footage Panels
• Go to Preferences > Video Preview and toggle Enable Mercury Transmit

If none of the steps given above help, obtain the System Information file (.NFO) and After Effects logs from your system and share them with us. Here is how you can do that:

Log files:

  • Launch After Effects and go to Help > Enable Logging.
  • Work in After Effects for a few minutes.
  • Then go to Help > Reveal Logging File.

System Info:

macOS:
Follow the steps given in this article: https://support.apple.com/en-in/HT203001

Windows:
1. Hold the Windows key and press R to open the Run window
2. Type msinfo32 and click OK
3. From the System Information window, go to File > Save
4. Save the file as .NFO

After collecting both the files, upload them to Adobe Creative Cloud Files by following the steps given in this article (https://helpx.adobe.com/in/creative-cloud/help/share.html) and share the URL in the comments section below.

Hi Giovas98A6,

Sorry for my delayed response.

You are running into this issue because your computer's memory and graphics specifications are too low to run the latest version of After Effects. The GPU in your machine is from 2011 that has 512 MB of vRAM. After Effects 2020 requires 2GB vRAM.

Thanks,

Rameez

Hey Ati.Far,

I keep monitoring this thread from time to time. Are you using After Effects 17.5?

Looking at your system information report, you're using an underpowered machine. Your computer doesn't meet the minimum memory and graphics requirements to run After Effects. The processor in your computer is primitive too - it's the 4th generation Intel Core i5 from 2013 with Intel HD 4000 graphics.

I'd recommend that you try an earlier version of After Effects.

Thanks,

Rameez

Hey Pruthvi98BC,

Sorry for your issue!

Your computer specs are too low to support the latest version of After Effects. It doesn't meet the memory and graphics requirements to run the app. Here, take a look at the system requirements: https://helpx.adobe.com/after-effects/user-guide.html/after-effects/system-requirements.ug.html

Please try an older version of After Effects.

Thanks,

Rameez

Hi there,

I am very new to after effects and seem to be having the same problem, have tried steps RameezKhan mentions however they have not worked.

I'm running AE version 17.1.2 on a 2013 Macbook Pro (macOS High Sierra) with an SSD drive and 16Gb of Ram.

When I first opened the after-effects there was no error message but now there is, could this be that my machine is just too old to cope with a newer version? Should I use an older version?

I have attached my system info below

Hi,

I'm having trouble with an GeForce GTX 560 Ti. I understand that this card isn't listed in raytracer_supported_cards.txt, however I've added it (under a variety of interpretations of the name) in order to try and cause AE to recognise it.

I'm getting a "Driver not supported" message appearing in a panel at AE startup, and also the "Display Acceleration Disabled" message in the composition panel.

I've followed the instructions above, and have configured the NVidia driver to use the GTX 560 for CUDA by AE.

I would be happy to upgrade to a more recent card, and I've seen that according to raytracer_supported_cards, AE is compatible with the GTX 570, 580 and 590. I'm concerned though that if I grab one of these cards that I will have the same problem given that I think they all use the same driver impementation.

Currently I have version 391.35 of the NVidia 500 series driver installed.

Can you please advise firstly whether you think it's expectred that I can't get the 560 working, and secondly whether it's ok to grab a higher level 500 series card and that this should definitely work?

I referred youtubes about "display acceleration disabled."

I followed the way they told several times, but it didn't work.

(erasing datas in "%temp%" and "temp")

I also did

• Go to Preferences > Display and toggle Hardware Accelerate Composition, Layer, and Footage Panels
• Go to Preferences > Video Preview and toggle Enable Mercury Transmit

Still my after effect shows "display acceleration disabled."

(by the way I dunno well about graphic drivers. I think my computer don't have that.)

Anyway, I want to make my videos ASAP. Please help me. Thank you.

This is a simple problem that could easily be fixed by Adobe, but instead it's always "you need a new this", "your machine is old", "you should update that". These are unacceptable "answers". I'm having the same issues, with no solution. I went back to cc 2019, and that worked until it was automatically updated to 2020, and the message is back to greet me every time. It's completely ridiculous and absurd to have people feeling inferior because they can't afford certain machines. Some of these features are not even necessary for everyone. Good for all the people that can consistently stay updated with absolutely everything and condescend everyone else. Good luck to everyone else.
